Château Ormes de Pez Saint-Estèphe 2020

On 35 hectares of prime Saint-Estèphe terroir, Domaines JM Cazes—which also owns Château Lynch-Bages—produces a wonderfully balanced Bordeaux. Nestled among illustrious neighbors such as Montrose, the two Ségurs, and Cos d’Estournel, this is a consistently excellent value wine that, in exceptional vintages like 2016, can soar to brilliant heights.Although the “elm trees of Pez,” which gave the château its name, were cut down long ago, the wine’s quality endures. Its special charm also lies in the fact that, while the Ormes de Pez is a typical Saint-Estèphe wine—with solid tannic structure and enormous aging potential—it always comes across as very balanced and harmonious. This is due in no small part to its blend of 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 54% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot, with the high proportion of Merlot providing the wine’s smooth, flattering character. 45% new barriques were used for 16 months to refine the wine. The grapes were harvested by hand, and an optical sorting machine was used for only the second time. The red wine is incredibly full-bodied, elegant, and full of finesse. The black-fruit-driven nose reveals notes of cherry, dark berries, cassis, and a hint of licorice. On the palate, there are also plenty of dark berries, very good, velvety tannins, followed by an exceptionally long finish. Throughout, everything remains harmonious and perfectly balanced.Neal Martin awards it 92–94 out of 100 points and suggests it might be one of the best Ormes de Pez ever producedJames Suckling rates it 93–94/100 pointsGalloni: 92/100This Saint-Estèphe, which will age well at least until 2030, benefits from decanting for at least one to two hours.

Alto Estate Blend 2018

Les Pagodes de Cos is the second wine from the renowned Château Cos d'Estournel in Saint-Estèphe, which, together with Château Montrose, has been at the top of the appellation for years. The grapes for "The Pagodas" from Cos - and the château, which resembles an Indian temple, really does have some - come from selected plots on the estate and give the wine its own personality. This is somewhat more accessible and perhaps a little less complex than the Grand Vin, but it is a pleasure to drink with its velvety texture, freshness and beautiful fruit.54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot give the wine its attractive, mineral and rather soft character. The emphasis here is clearly more on the fruit and an earlier drinking pleasure than with its big brother, which is a marathon runner and takes a long time to reach drinking maturity.Great black berry fruit, some coffee and tobacco on the nose. Round on the palate with a very beautiful, elegant structure. The tannins are well integrated and the finish is long and lingering.
