Der Blend aus 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Cabernet Franc, 18% Merlot und 3% Petit Verdot duftet nach roten und dunklen Früchten (Johannisbeeren), erdigen Noten sowie nach Fynbos, den für Südafrika typischen Gewächsen. Weinkritiker Greg de Bruyn beschreibt das Bouquet in Platter’s Wine Guide so: „Waldboden-Erdigkeit, jodhaltige Mineralität und saftige Cassis-Frucht, durchzogen von Tabakwürze.“

Am Gaumen ist der Rotwein aus der Stellenbosch-Region trocken und vielschichtig, mit großer Konzentration und Frische. Die schöne Mineralität und die aromatische Tiefe (dunkle Beeren im Vordergrund) runden das Geschmackserlebnis ab. „Geschmeidig und rund nach 18 Monaten in größtenteils neuem Eichenholz“, urteilt auch de Bruyn.

Der warme Jahrgang 2018 brachte Trauben mit sehr konzentrierten Aromen hervor. Durch den anderthalbjährigen Ausbau in Eichenholzfässern, die zu 70% neu waren, erreicht der Alto Estate Blend dann endgültig seine außergewöhnliche Qualität.

The Alto Rouge consists of 5 grape varieties: Cabernet Franc, Shiraz, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. The grapes for this wine come from north- and northwest-facing vineyards located on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountains. Thus, the vines are cooled by a fresh breeze in the afternoon, supporting the wine’s elegance and balance. The Alto Rouge is a deep ruby-red in the glass. On the nose, aromas of red fruit are predominant, along with hints of chocolate and light notes of woodchips. This cuvée is distinguished by its soft tannins and wonderful fruit aromas. Overall, this is a wine with style, lots of complexity and a high ageing potential. Winemaker Bertho van de Westhuizen recommends enjoying the Alto Rouge with game birds and tender red meat.
