Château Cantemerle Grand Cru Haut-Médoc AOC 2019

Château Cantemerle greets wine travelers on the D2, the most famous wine route in the world, like a kind of gatekeeper to the Médoc peninsula. Arriving from Bordeaux, Château La Lagune on the right and Château Cantemerle on the left send you on a trip to the wonderland of Bordeaux. The estate has been classified as a Cinquieme Grand Cru Classé since the 1855 classification, making it one of the "caste" of the truly best and most prestigious wines of the Bordelais.2019 was the second year in a series of three outstanding years in Bordeaux. Unsurprisingly, the Cantemerle 2019 is a shining testament to this fact, and not just in terms of its beautiful, deep red sparkling robe. The blend consists of 47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 7% Cabernet Franc. This Cantemerle matured for 12 months in French oak barrels, with 40% new barrels.Lots of blackberry, cassis, tobacco, freshly picked flowers, wood and wild mushrooms on the nose. The palate is not too full-bodied, with polished tannins and good structure. A rather softer representative of the left bank, but still a very classic Bordeaux. The finish is long and flattering.Château Cantemerle 2019 should be allowed to mature for at least three years before 2022 in order to maximize the drinking experience.James Suckling: 95/100Decanter: 92/100Robert Parker: 92/100

Château Charmail is known for producing wines that very often score significantly higher than their price would suggest. Charmail, classified as a Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel, was taken over by Oliver Seze in the 1980s and underwent a "horse cure" of renewal until the wines once again reached the level of the terroir on which its vines grow. As a neighbor of Sociando-Mallet and Phélan-Ségur, the Gironde is not far away and the wine is now one of the best in the Haut-Médoc. Seze is still active as a consultant, but has handed over the vineyard to Bernard d'Halluin and his daughter Marie.2018 is the first year of the "dream trilogy" 2018, 2019 and 2020, which produced outstanding wines in the Bordelais. The cuvée consists of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 8% Petit Verdot. The appeal of this wine lies in its creaminess and fine fruit, with underlying sweet aromas. Blue and black berries, cassis, tobacco and chocolate delight the nose. Silky on the palate, with a medium-full body, toasty notes from the wood, which do not dominate, and polished tannins. The finish is long lasting. This elegant and balanced Haut-Médoc is already ready to drink, but only after about an hour of decanting. However, it should still have a span of at least 15 years ahead of it, provided it is stored properly, of course. The 2018 offers a great drinking experience at an excellent price-performance ratio. Fine Bordeaux enjoyment doesn't get any cheaper than this!Jeb Dunnuck: 93/100Suckling: 92-93/100Kunz/Gabriel: 17/20

Spier Frans K. Smit Red 2018

Every vintage of Spier Frans K. Smit Red is a work of art. The vines for the blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot all come from the western and north-western slopes of the Helderberg in Stellenbosch. Decomposed granite soils there store water well, which leads to slow maturation and increased mineral complexity. The area also benefits from the cooling effect of the nearby Atlantic Ocean. The winegrowers invest a great deal of time and care in each individual vine. After harvesting by hand and carefully packing the grapes into small 10 kg crates, they are hand-picked, crushed and pumped into a mixture of 500 l barrels and small steel tanks, where the juice remains on the lees for 3 - 6 weeks. The wine is then transferred to small French oak barrels for a maturation period of around 24 months.Winemaker Frans K Smit, after whom the wine is named, selects the best blends from the barrels, which then continue to mature in the barrel for a further 6-8 months. Each barrel of the limited, internationally sought-after red wine is personally made by him.The Spier flagship impresses in the glass with its deep and vibrant ruby red color. On the nose, there are notes of cigar box, berries, cherries and nuances of mint. The Cabernet Franc brings subtle richness, sweet fruit and creaminess to the palate, while the Petit Verdot brings balance and structure. The red wine is complex and dense in structure, with a silky, medium palate and a soft, long finish. The tannins are firm and assertive on the one hand, but also round, soft and elegant. The balance and refined elegance of this blend harmonize well with meat dishes such as rib-eye steaks, roast beef and smoky grilled steaks.
