A red wine from South Africa that is simply fun and a perfect companion for carefree hours: the Plaisir de Merle Estate Red is a blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc. The blend matured for around one and a half years in French (70%) and American (30%) oak.The result is a small feast for the senses: Petit Plaisir smells of ripe cherries, blackberries, dark plums and blackcurrants. There are also nuances of raspberry, dark chocolate and vanilla.On the palate, this South African ruby red wine from the Paarl region is dry, aromatic and wonderfully smooth, with firm, velvety tannins. John Platter's Wine Guide awarded the Grand Plaisir 93 points. The wonderful blend from the Plaisir de Merle wine estate is a composition by winemaker Niel Bester from the grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon (59%), Cabernet Franc (20%), Malbec (12%) and Petit Verdot (9%).This South African red wine shines in the glass in a powerful ruby red colour. The bouquet is stimulatingly multi-faceted. Notes of blackcurrants, blackberries, mulberries and plums interact harmoniously with hints of cedar wood and dried herbs, as well as subtle nuances of cocoa and coffee. ‘Spice & graphite notes share the limelight with elegant fruit, dark chocolate, even dried herbs,’ writes Christine Rudman in Platter's Wine Guide.On the palate, the Grand Plaisir is dry, wonderfully clear and full-bodied. With an engaging aroma of ripe cherries, blueberries, plums and apricots. There is also a fine spiciness and velvety, perfectly integrated tannins. Rudman writes of a ‘tannin backbone that is enveloped by the juicy fruit’ and gives the Grand Plaisir greater ageing potential (ten years and even beyond).The red wine from the Paarl region matured for 18 months in new French oak barrels. After blending, it matured for a further 6 months in third-fill oak barrels. Promontory Napa Valley 2018

100 Punkte für den Promontory 2018 vergeben James Suckling und Antonio Galloni. Suckling erkennt im Bouquet Noten von Veilchen und Heidelbeeren mit Nelken und Tannenzapfen, Galloni schreibt von dunklen Früchten, Kies, Gewürzen, Lakritz und Leder.Am Gaumen ist der tief granat-lila farbene Wein trocken, mit mittlerem bis vollem Körper. Er „zeigt feste, exquisit feinkörnige Tannine und eine nahtlose Frische, die die intensiven, knackigen schwarzen Früchte wunderbar umrahmen und klingt lang und mineralisch aus“ (Perroti-Brown). Suckling schreibt von „straffen, nahtlosen Tanninen, wie fein geschliffene Diamanten. Er ist am Ende sehr geschlossen und zurückhaltend. Schwerelos. Braucht viel Zeit zum Öffnen. Ein einzigartiger Wein“. Galloni: „Ein Wein von Größe und Opulenz, der im Jahrgang 2018 jeden Winkel des Gaumens erreicht. Betörende Aromatik und präzise, geschliffene Tannine – so schwer zu erreichen in einem Wein aus Höhenlagen – runden das Ganze stilvoll ab.“Bill Harlan entdeckte die herausragende Lage, auf der die Trauben für den Promontory reifen, in den frühen 1980er-Jahren. Im Seitental des Napa Valley, geprägt von Hunderten Hektar Wald, baut Harlan auf 30 Hektar vor allen Dingen Cabernet Sauvignon an, dazu etwas Cabernet Franc, Malbec und Petit Verdot. Die Höhenlage und vor allen Dingen die außergewöhnliche Komplexität der Böden (wozu auch Schiefer-Gestein gehört) machen den Promontory zu einem einzigartigen Wein.Dass die Macherinnen und Macher des Promontory beim Ausbau dieses „Bordeaux-Blend“ aus den USA wesentlich auf Großholz von Stockinger aus Österreich setzen, macht das Ganze endgültig zu einer Ausnahme-Kreation. Seit 2009, dem ersten auf den Markt gebrachten Jahrgang, gab es in Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate für den Promontory im Grunde immer Bewertungen von 97 oder mehr Punkten (einzige Ausnahme: 2011 mit 94+). Der Promontory 2016 erhielt die magischen 100 Punkte.

Pym Rae Napa Valley 2018

The winery was founded by the brilliant actor Robin Williams, who named it after the middle names of his children Pym and Rae. In 2016, the Bordelais-based Tesseron family bought this vineyard in Napa Valley, located on Mount Veeder, which only covers around 8 hectares. Alfred Tesseron, one of the grand seigneurs in Bordeaux, had already taken Château Pontet-Canet in Pauillac to unimagined heights by being the first producer in Bordeaux to introduce biodynamics and resolutely and rigidly adhering to the principle of "back to nature". This was done in his very individual way, always striving for the very highest quality.You can expect nothing less from PYM-RAE. In 2016, purely organic work was immediately introduced here too and the son of the technical director of Pontet-Canet, Thomas Comme, is in charge. The consultant is star oenologist Michel Rolland, himself now a legend. "Manual work" is the motto at PYM-RAE; the vines are on average 29 years old and the grapes and must are treated with exceptional care in the cellar. No pumps are used and extraction is very gentle, not least because of the extremely small vats.PYM-RAE is composed of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc and thus corresponds to a classic Bordeaux cuvée. Hand-picked and matured for 16 months in 70% new French oak barrels and 30% in small concrete tanks, PYM-RAE is given the finishing touches.The result is a stunning grape juice of majestic proportions, of which unfortunately only a few bottles find their way to Europe.The wine is characterized by a great deal of fruit, elegance and silky tannins, with incredible depth and opulence. In addition to the plum, blackberry and blueberry aromas, paired with cassis, there are also notes of violets, chocolate, cigar box, mint, cocoa and olives.This "American Beauty" with French roots is best enjoyed solo over the next 40 years, or with a good steak or game board. Very curious wine lovers should decant it for about 1 1/2 hours beforehand. Incidentally, "solo" does not mean that you can't share the wine with good friends!
