Diemersfontein Harlequin Shiraz - Pinotage 2022

Sometimes it’s so easy to create a wine. One evening, Sue Sonnenberg, the wife of the owner of the Diemersfontein estate David Sonnenberg, asked her husband whether the painting in their dining room wouldn’t be a wonderful depiction for the label of the bottles of wine. It didn’t take long before the iconic presentation of Carl Büchner’s Harlequin was depicted on the label.This wine commemorates this exemplary artist: in cooperation with the ‘Association of Arts’ in Pretoria, a part of the revenue from sales of this wine goes into a small fund supporting aspiring artists. The Diemersfontein Harlequin is made from the Shiraz and Pinotage grape varieties. The Shiraz was aged in third- and fourth-fill wooden casks, while the Pinotage matured for 12 months in French oak staves. Winemaker Francois Roode assembled several blends and finally chose the most expressive one. The Diemersfontein Harlequin is a dark red in colour and offers lovely berry and roast aromas in its bouquet. On the palate, the wine shows aromas of plums and currants, along with noticeable notes of mocha. It has a slightly sweet taste and a juicy tannin structure.The Diemersfontein Harlequin goes beautifully with lamb or curry dishes. It is also an ideal accompaniment to barbecue.

Dornier Pinotage 2022

The Dornier Pinotage comes from the famous Swartland, a wine region about 50 kilometers north of Dornier, which is known for its unique terroirs and strong wines. The vines grow on natural bush vineyards in a soil mix of sand and coffee stone. These dry conditions without irrigation result in small grapes with intensely concentrated aromas and make for particularly characterful wines.This Pinotage is a deep garnet red in the glass. Intense, persistent aromas of cherries and red berries unfold on the nose, finely complemented by notes of Turkish honey and rose water. On the palate, the red wine impresses with powerful concentration and an exciting combination of aromas of plum, bitter cherry, strawberry jam and black pepper. The taste experience is rounded off by subtle, spicy wood notes from the ageing in French oak.The grapes are harvested by hand for vinification. Some of the grapes are not destemmed in order to obtain additional structure. Fermentation takes place in open stainless steel tanks with pumping over four times a day to extract the fruit and tannins optimally. The Pinotage is pressed before complete drying and fermentation is completed in barrel. Malolactic fermentation also takes place in the barrel. The wine then matures for 18 months in French oak barrels, 10% of which are new wood, which further increases the complexity and depth of the wine.Dornier Pinotage is an excellent accompaniment to roasts and game dishes. Spicy dishes such as curries and the South African national dish bobotie also harmonize perfectly with this wine.

Kanonkop Black Label Pinotage - South Africa's icon in its purest formAn "icon" wine is the name given to a wine that has held an exceptional position for years. And this is exactly what the Kanonkop Black Label Pinotage has achieved. This South African Pinotage can rightly claim to be something very special. The grapes come from 63-year-old bushvine vines, the name given to vines that grow in bush form in South Africa. This means that the vines grow naturally, with the winemaker only intervening in nature by pruning. The vines thrive on dry soils characterized by decomposed granite and weathered rock. The yield per hectare is extremely low at 2.8 tons, which ensures a high level of complexity in the wine.Fermentation took place in open concrete vats. The mash was manually pressed every 2 hours and the juice was extracted from the skins after 3.5 days. Maturation took place for 18 months in 100% new French barrique barrels. As a result, the Kanonkop Black Label Pinotage achieves complex aromas of black cherry, plum and dark chocolate with a hint of cedar on the nose. On the palate, it is full with a velvety tannin structure and notes of red and black fruits.
