Meerlust Merlot

The Meerlust Merlot comes from the traditional Meerlust Estate in Stellenbosch - a wine estate that has been synonymous with top South African wines for centuries. This single-varietal Merlot cuvée impressively demonstrates how complex and long-lasting the grape variety can be vinified in the cooler locations of the Cape Winelands.The wine shines a deep ruby red in the glass. Intense aromas of black plums, dark cherries and fine herbs unfold on the nose, accompanied by hints of mocha, tobacco and subtle spice. On the palate, the Merlot is powerful and juicy with ripe, dark fruit flavors and a present but elegant acidity. Notes of cherry tobacco, black pepper and delicate wood provide multi-layered depth. The finish is long, structured and supported by fine-grained tannins - a wine with excellent ageing potential.The wine is aged for a total of 18 months: first, the individual vineyards are vinified separately and matured in small French barriques. After blending, the wine is matured further in oak, with around 40% new wood being used. The wine is then further refined in the bottle before being sold.Meerlust Merlot is an excellent accompaniment to braised lamb, fillet of beef with mushroom jus, mature hard cheese or pasta with dark sauces. Enjoy it at a drinking temperature of 16-18 °C.The Meerlust Merlot has an intense, dark color in the glass. The bouquet combines notes of brambly fruit, mulberry, licorice and damson plum, with a hint of dark chocolate and spices. On the palate, this red wine offers generous Merlot fruit, with structured acidity and yet soft tannins, as well as a pronounced length and minerality.The Merlot from the Meerlust winery is an excellent accompaniment to red meat, game and strong cheeses.

Der Steenberg Catharina ist ein Bordeaux Blend, wobei die Stilistik an die Weine des rechten Ufers der Gironde erinnern. Kein Wunder, ist dieser Rotwein doch Merlot dominiert. Die Rebsorten wurden jeweils einzeln vergoren und für 18 Monate in neuen und gebrauchten Eichenfässern gereift. Danach gemischt und für weitere 6 Monate im Holz gereift. Entstanden ist ein subtiler, verführerischer Wein.Der Steenberg Catharina Red Blend zeigt in der Nase eine Fülle an dunklen Kirschen, Zigarre, Kaffee, Vanille, Preiselbeeren und Bitterschokolade. Vielschichtig geht es auch am Gaumen zu; hier präsentieren sich konzentrierte Fruchtaromen von Himbeere und Johannisbeere. Rund und mit viel Tiefe und eingeschlossen von einer samtigen Textur kommt im Abgang seine tolle Frische zum Ausdruck.Der Catharina Red Blend von Steenberg ergänzt als Essensbegleiter dunkles Fleisch mit kräftiger Sauce ganz hervorragend.

Eine Hommage an die Gründerin von Steenberg, Catharina Ras. Five Lives symbolisiert ihre Lebensgeschichte, die in fünf Kapiteln beschrieben werden kann. Eine Frau, die Ihren Mut nutzte, sich anzupassen und jeder neuen Herausforderung fern von Ihrer Heimat Lübeck trotzte.Die Weinberge für den südafrikanischen Steenberg Five Lives Red Blend liegen auf altem Granit in der Region Westkap. Merlot und Cabernet Sauvignon werden in Edelstahltanks vinifiziert. Vor der Gärung werden 10-15 % des Saftes von den Schalen entfernt, um den Körper und die Fülle zu verbessern. Beide Sorten werden 14 Tage lang getrennt auf den Schalen vergoren. Zweimal am Tag wird abgepumpt, um Farbe und Tannin zu extrahieren. Nach der Gärung werden sie getrennt in kleine französische Eichenfässer umgefüllt. Die malolaktische Gärung findet im Fass statt und der Wein reift 20 Monate lang. Anschließend wird der Wein verschnitten und vor der Abfüllung leicht geklärt.Im Glas zeigt sich der Rotwein in einer intensiven dunkelroten Farbe mit einem helleren Granatrot am Rand. Die Nase umspielen Aromen von Schwarzer Johannisbeere, Cassis, Noten von Erde, Basilikum und Pflaume. Der Wein ist mittelkräftig bis vollmundig und zeigt eine seidige Textur und Tiefe sowie eine elegante Tanninstruktur. Noch lange nach dem letzten Schluck prägen den Gaumen pikantes Pesto aus sonnengetrockneten Tomaten, Tabakgewürz, Kirsche und Zimt. Der Merlot bildet das Rückgrat dieses Weins mit sauberen, hellen Früchten, die ihm subtile Frische verleihen. Der Cabernet Sauvignon bringt ein formales, ernsthaftes Profil in die Mischung ein.
