How do you make an excellent wine even better? For Mariano García Fernández, the founder of the Bodega Aalto estate, this can be achieved only by selecting the best grapes. The selection of the grapes was carried out parcel by parcel. This explains the wine’s ‘PS’ designation, which stands for ‘parcel’ and ‘selection’. Only the grapes from the best parcels with the oldest vines are selected to produce the Aalto PS. The grapes for this pure varietal Tempranillo come partly from vines that are more than 60 years old. The vines grow on soils with lime and slate subsoils, giving the wine a lovely mineral freshness. The wine is aged in steel tanks before it matures for 21 months in new French barriques. Subsequently, the wine is aged for another 6 months in used casks. The Aalto PS is a dark, dense purple in colour. Its bouquet is characterised by strong notes of wood and flavours of plums and black cherries. On the palate, the wine is extremely complex, concentrated and powerful. The body continues unabated in a never-ending finish. Although the wine is already quite balanced, further ageing in the bottle will certainly enhance its quality. Serve the Aalto PS with lamb, game or tangy cheeses. This wine is a genuine delight! It is also available in a magnum bottle.

Beyerskloof Diesel Pinotage 2022

‘Diesel Pinotage’ is certainly an unusual name for a wine. However, it is easily explained once you know the history behind it. ‘Diesel’ was the name of the dog of Beyer Truters, the owner of the Beyerskloof estate. The dog was his beloved, loyal and constant companion. Diesel was always at his side, whether in the vineyards, in the cellar or in his office, so it was only logical that Beyers Truters named his best wine after his ‘best’ friend.The grapes for the Beyerskloof Diesel Pinotage come from bush vines that are cultivated without wire trellis training systems. In South Africa, the bush vine method is often used specifically for Pinotage. The fermentation took place in open barrels for 5 days at an average temperature of 78.8° F, while the must was pressed down every 2 hours. Subsequently, the malolactic fermentation was carried out in stainless steel tanks. Afterwards, the wine matured for 21 months in new French oak casks. Only 20 out of a total of 300 filled barrels were chosen to produce the Diesel Pinotage.The Beyerskloof Diesel Pinotage is a deep purple in the glass. Its bouquet is characterised by complex aromas of blackberries and dark fruit, complemented by elegant notes of cedar wood. On the palate, the wine shows a fine but complex structure of black and red fruit. This Pinotage is truly a superb wine, captivating with its outstanding balance between fruit and wood. This wine has an outstanding ageing potential and it is expected to be a genuine delight over the next 10 years or even longer.It is an ideal accompaniment to spicy Indian cuisine or a well-matured rump steak. The Beyerskloof Diesel Pinotage is arguably one of the best Pinotage wines from the Cape.

Bodegas LAN Culmen Reserva 2017

Intense and bright cherry colour.Ripe fruit nose, with hints of plums, cherries and wildberries. Spicy, roasted and balsamic aromas. Memories of mineral notes, which identify it with the vineyard. It leaves a long and lingering finish that allows us to remember all the above described and shows the great personality of this wine. Culmen is only produced from harvests of outstanding quality.Grape varieties: 89% Tempranillo, 11% GracianoSelected grapes from 40 years old vines coming from "Pago EI Rincón", located at own vineyard "Viñia Lanciano". Grapes are picked up by hand and afterwards selected, grain by grain at sorting tables. Fermentation of destalked grapes takes place in new small stainless steel tanks to obtain the best colour extraction. Malolactic fermentation took place in new French Allier oak.Aging: During 20 months in new French oak barrel followed by 18 months in the bottle.

The Bodegas LAN Gran Reserva consists of 97% Tempranillo grapes and 3% Mazuelo grapes. The grapes were carefully selected and come from the best vines with an age of 20-25 years.In the glass, the wine has a bright cherry red color with light orange tones. On the nose, this red wine is expressive with aromas of vanilla, cinnamon, cedar and red fruits. The finish is very long with great complexity. The wine matured for 2 years in American oak barrels and then for another 3 years in the bottle. Due to the long maturation, the wine is very soft and elegant and has a hint of leather and cigars.The Bodegas LAN Gran Reserva is a wine for special occasions. Château Ormes de Pez Saint-Estèphe 2016

Die "Ulmen von Pez", die dem Château den Namen gaben, wurden zwar längst abgesägt, die Qualität des Weins hat jedoch Bestand.Sein besonderer Charme liegt auch darin begründet, dass der Ormes de Pez zwar ein typischer Saint-Estèphe Vertreter ist, mit durchaus Tannin-Rückrat und enormer Lagerfähigkeit, er aber immer sehr ausgewogen und harmonisch daher kommt. Das liegt nicht zuletzt an seiner Assemblage von 52% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc und 1% Petit Verdot, bei der der große Anteil von Merlot für das schmeichlerische Element sorgt. 45% neue Barriques wurden für einen Zeitraum von 16 Monaten für den Feinschliff eingesetzt; die Lese erfolgte von Hand und zum zweiten Male erst wurde eine optische Sortiermaschine verwendet.Der Wein ist unglaublich vollmundig, elegant und finessenreich. Die schwarzfruchtige Nase zeigt Noten von Kirsche, dunklen Beeren und Cassis und ein wenig Süßholz. Am Gaumen ebenfalls viel dunkle Beerenfrüchte, sehr gute, samtige Tannine, gefolgt von einem ausgesprochen lang anhaltenden Nachhall. Dabei bleibt alles immer harmonisch und in großer Balance. Neal Martin vergibt 92-94/100 Punkte und meint, dass es einer der besten Ormes de Pez überhaupt sein könnte; James Suckling bewertet ihn mit 93-94/100 Punkten; Galloni: 92/100.Dieser mindestens bis 2030 gut reifende Saint-Estèphe gewinnt durch ein Dekantieren von mindestens ein bis zwei Stunden.

Dichtverwobener, vielschichtiger, cremiger, fein opulenter, burgundischer Gaumen mit fein konzentrierter, cremiger Struktur, sehr viel feinem Tannin, süsser, super Aromatik, kräftiger, feiner Frucht, sehr langer, aromatischer, frischer Abgang mit vielen Rückaromen. Ein völlig anderer Stil als die anderen grossen Weine vom Médoc, aber ein grossartiger Wein".Trinkreif ab Ende der 2020er Jahre.Kunz: 20/20 Punkte; James Suckling: 98/100 Punkte; Falstaff: 99/100 Punkte.

Delheim Grand Reserve 2015

In contrast to the 2014 vintage, the Delheim Grand Reserve 2015 consists of significantly higher percentages of Merlot. The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, which are predominant in this wine, come from three different vineyards located in the Stellenbosch region. The Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes grow on vineyards located on the slopes of the Klapmutskop Mountains. The vines for this wonderful cuvée are at least 10 years old, and some of them are more than 20 years old, ensuring exceptional depth and structure of the wine. To ensure optimal pre-selection, all the grapes were picked by hand.During the fermentation, the grapes were stirred three times a day to achieve maximal aroma extraction from the grapes. The whole process was carried out at controlled temperatures. After the three grape varieties were aged for 16 months, the maturity of the Merlot was decisive for the blending and therefore for the mixture of the final wine. Finally, the Delheim Grand Reserve matured for another 4 months in used 300-litre oak casks.On the nose, the brilliant, dark ruby-red wine pampers your senses with aromas of mint, cassis and truffle, rounded off by fine nuances of red berries. On the palate, the wine shows wonderful fruity notes which are preserved despite the wine’s immense fullness and power. The Delheim Grand Reserve 2015 goes beautifully with any luxurious meal and is also an ideal accompaniment to tangy cheeses.

Delheim Grand Reserve 2018

In recent years, the Delheim Grand Reserve, the flagship wine from the top South African winery Delheim, has been a guarantor of top ratings from national and international wine critics. This South African red wine was rated in John Platter's Wine Guide with at least 90 points and 4.5 to 5 stars (out of a maximum of 5). And the 2018 vintage of Delheim Grand Reserve is also the result of exceptional winemaking.On the nose, this composition of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 15% Petit Verdot and 10% Merlot is wonderfully intense and multi-faceted. The red wine from Stellenbosch combines notes of dark fruits (with blackberries and black currants predominating) with hints of tobacco and tomato leaf. There are also nuances of violets, blueberries and graphite. On the palate, Delheim Grand Reserve is dry and wonderfully elegantly balanced. The dark fruit aromas and the present tannins interact in a remarkable fashion, complemented by the delicately fresh acidity and a finish with nuances of vanilla that lingers for a good long while. The Bordeaux blend from South Africa matured for 18 months in 300-litre French oak barrels after meticulous manual harvesting of the best, healthiest grapes. Delheim attaches immense importance to using only wood that meets the highest quality standards.The Delheim Grand Reserve 2018 also stands out visually: it is a deep, dark purple in the glass with a cherry-red rim. The makers are justifiably proud of this creation and see a storage potential of up to 15 years. Enjoy this powerful, fruity red wine from the Stellenbosch region at a drinking temperature of 16 to 18 degrees. It goes wonderfully with braised beef or game as well as grilled vegetables.
