The grapes for this exceptional wine come from the best parcels of BV Ranch No. 1 and No. 2 in the Rutherford area, where deep, volcanic soils with a high tuff and clay content ensure an incomparable concentration of aromas and structure.2019 was a near-perfect vintage in Napa Valley with a balanced climate. After a cool and wet spring, a long, dry summer ensured that the grapes ripened slowly and evenly, allowing for an exceptional balance between fruit, acidity and tannin.In the glass, the Georges de Latour Private Reserve 2019 has a deep purple color with violet reflections. On the nose, it develops an intense bouquet of blackcurrant, stewed grapes, black cherry, orange peel and black plum, alongside spicy, perfumed notes of wild violet, rose petals, fresh spearmint, bay leaf and earth.Warm baking spice notes from the French oak barrel influence add vanilla, caramel and allspice. Saturated dark fruits are present and voluminous throughout the palate, displaying a mouth-coating structure with density and enveloping richness. Full-bodied and multi-layered, secondary notes of bittersweet dark chocolate, spicy umami, leather, tobacco leaf and graphite lend additional nuance and complexity. The Recher Herrenberg wine matured for 18 months entirely in new barriques. The meticulous hand-selected grapes come from the excellent Herrenberg an der Ahr vineyard located in the village of Rech. The central south-facing steep slopes with their weathered slate soil consisting of greywacke have gradients of up to 60%, providing the ideal basis for the optimal ripening of the grapes under the intense rays of the sun.

And this is exactly what the Kanonkop Black Label Pinotage has achieved. This South African Pinotage can rightly claim to be something very special. The grapes come from 63-year-old bushvine vines, the name given to vines that grow in bush form in South Africa. This means that the vines grow naturally, with the winemaker only intervening in nature by pruning. The vines thrive on dry soils characterized by decomposed granite and weathered rock. The yield per hectare is extremely low at 2.8 tons, which ensures a high level of complexity in the wine.Fermentation took place in open concrete vats. The mash was manually pressed every 2 hours and the juice was extracted from the skins after 3.5 days. Maturation took place for 18 months in 100% new French barrique barrels. As a result, the Kanonkop Black Label Pinotage achieves complex aromas of black cherry, plum and dark chocolate with a hint of cedar on the nose. On the palate, it is full with a velvety tannin structure and notes of red and black fruits. Opus One, the Californian high-flyer and joint child of wine legends Mondavi and Rothschild, is now producing an incomparable series of top vintages in succession. 2018 does not break this streak, but seamlessly continues and even surpasses some of the previous years.This is due in particular to the mild and very consistent weather conditions in 2018, which, apart from a little rain before bud break, were ideal and above all did not show the excessive heat that has often been seen in Napa Valley recently.The Opus One 2018 consists of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, 5% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec and was aged for 17 months in new French oak barrels.Creamy, deep and heavenly fruity are associations that are often heard in connection with Opus One. The 2018 Opus One is no exception. The nose is black berry, cassis, lots of black cherry and blackberry, followed by elegant notes of violet, white pepper and rose petals. The seductive bouquet is supported by further aromas of black fruit, orange peel, licorice and dark chocolate. Everything is wonderfully balanced, with beautifully polished and round tannins. The finish is almost infinitely long.As is so often the case with Californians, the Opus One 2018 also manages to show a cellaring potential of several decades, but is still ready to drink very early.
