La Demoiselle de Sociando-Mallet from the outstanding 2022 vintage is the second wine of the historic Château Sociando-Mallet estate and comes from the renowned Haut-Médoc appellation on the left bank of the Gironde in Bordeaux. The 2022 vintage is a blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon. The vines grow on the gravelly and clay soils typical of the Médoc, with a limestone subsoil that lends the wines both power and freshness. As a second wine, vinified from younger vines, La Demoiselle offers a more approachable style than the estate’s Grand Vin, yet retains the characteristic expression and quality of this renowned estate.
In the glass, the wine displays a deep ruby red color. The bouquet is characterized by intense aromas of black currants, elderberries, and ripe cherries, complemented by subtle notes of cinnamon, white pepper, roasted coffee, and a hint of menthol. On the palate, it is juicy, harmonious, and well-balanced, with ripe fruit, a smooth texture, and well-integrated tannins. The predominance of Merlot lends it fullness and charm, while the Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure, freshness, and length. The finish is spicy and elegant with a pleasant mineral note.
As a food pairing, La Demoiselle de Sociando-Mallet 2022 pairs excellently with grilled or braised beef, rack of lamb, duck breast, and game dishes. It also pairs very well with hearty mushroom dishes, aged hard cheeses, or a classic roast beef. Its combination of dark fruit, subtle spice, and elegant tannic structure makes it a versatile Bordeaux that complements both festive meals and upscale everyday cuisine, and is sure to be a delight to share with good friends.

Château Sociando-Mallet, gelegen im nördlichen Haut-Médoc, direkt angrenzend an Saint-Estèphe, ist einer der beständigsten "Best-values" von ganz Bordeaux. Seit Jahrzehnten liefert dieses nicht klassifizierte Gut Weine, die zu einem immer noch sehr moderaten Preis auf dem Niveau mindestens eines Troisième Cru liegen. Hier werden keine Kompromisse gemacht, sowohl was die Qualität des Weines betrifft, als auch seinen Stil. Dieser gilt unter Kennern als klassischer, konzentrierter und tanninreicher Rebsaft, der den Weinliebhaber, nach mindestens 10jähriger Kellerreifung, als traditioneller Bordeaux zu betören weiß.
Der Cabernet Sauvignon-Anteil von Sociando Mallet überwiegt den Merlot, wobei die Assemblage durch etwas Cabernet Franc und manchmal Petit Verdot ergänzt wird. Jean Gautreau besitzt Sociando-Mallet seit 1969; seine strenge Handlese der Trauben der sehr alten Rebstöcke und nur wenige Eingriffe im Weinberg und im Keller (kein green harvesting, keine Filterung oder Schönung) werden regelmäßig durch hohe Parker-Benotungen geadelt.
Sociando-Mallet zeichnet sich durch eine tiefdunkle Farbe aus und sein Bukett ist ebenfalls unverkennbar. Beerenfrüchte, unter anderem Himbeeren, Brombeeren, intensive Cassis-Aromen aber auch Röst- und Lakritznoten vereinen sich zu einem rassigen Ganzen. Der Wein von Sociando-Mallet ist in jungen Jahren, aufgrund seiner burschikosen Machart, kein Schmeichler. Dieses Wort der Warnung ist erforderlich, um Bordeaux-Novizen mit diesem Wein nicht zu erschrecken oder abzuschrecken. Belohnt wird man allerdings, wenn man ausreichend langen Atem für die Wartezeit hat, mit einem umso faszinierenderem Trinkerlebnis.
