Chateau Poujeaux Moulis-en-Medoc AOC 2020

Château Poujeaux 2020 is an outstanding wine from the Moulis-en-Médoc appellation, one of the smaller but highly regarded regions on the left bank of Bordeaux. The estate, whose origins date back to the Middle Ages, is known for its consistent quality work and its ability to produce wines with strong character and longevity year after year. The 2020 vintage benefited from a balanced climate with warm days, cool nights and an ideal ripening period, resulting in excellent concentration and elegance in the grapes.

The cuvée of the 2020 vintage consists predominantly of Cabernet Sauvignon (54%), supplemented by Merlot (40%) and Petit Verdot (6%). This classic Bordeaux composition reflects the terroir character of the gravelly soils in Moulis particularly well and ensures complexity and depth.

In the glass, Château Poujeaux 2020 is an intense, deep ruby red. The nose reveals a multi-layered bouquet of dark berries, particularly cassis, black cherry and blackberry, accompanied by floral notes such as violets as well as cedar, tobacco, cocoa and a hint of graphite - typical of the Left Bank style.

On the palate, the wine impresses with density and elegance. The tannins are finely polished, the texture silky, and yet the Poujeaux 2020 has a powerful structure. The fruit aromas are concentrated but not overripe, accompanied by fresh acidity and a beautiful mineral note. The finish is long, harmonious and shows very good ageing potential.

The 2020 vintage is considered by wine critics to be one of the best in the winery's recent history. James Suckling awarded it 93 points and praised its "precise structure, purity and depth". Wine Advocate and Vinous also emphasized the balance of power, freshness and elegance. The wine is already very appealing when young, but has the potential to mature for 15 to 20 years, during which it will continue to grow in complexity.

Château Poujeaux 2020 is a classic but modern Bordeaux with depth, structure and finesse. It combines the typical virtues of a Médoc wine - power, elegance and ageability - while at the same time displaying an accessible fruit and finesse that makes it very attractive even when young. An excellent representative of its terroir with a convincing price-performance ratio.

Product recommendation

Château La Tour Carnet Grand Cru Classé AOC
This Bordeaux from the Haut-Médoc appellation was classified as a 4ème Cru Classé in the 1855 classification. It is a wine for connoisseurs, a head of character with rough edges, which, however, become somewhat smoother with ageing. The quality of the wines from La Tour Carnet has risen extraordinarily since Bernard Magrez took over in 1999.The nose is beautifully fruity with hints of black pepper, blueberries, morello cherries and blackcurrants, as well as mushrooms, leather and prunes. It comes across as quite powerful and juicy, but still shows a rather impetuous power, which will, however, subside. Overall, there is a lot of potential here for a long wine life, with already well-integrated tannins and a long finish. It is recommended to decant the wine, which was vinified from 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 70% Merlot, at least one hour before drinking.

Château Labégorce, whose roots date back to the 18th century, stands for elegance, sophistication and a deep understanding of traditional Bordeaux winemaking. The 2020 vintage benefited from a particularly favorable climate: a warm, dry summer with occasional rainfall in August ensured optimally ripened grapes with excellent concentration and freshness. The 2020 cuvée is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (50%) and Merlot (45%), supplemented by smaller proportions of Petit Verdot (2%) and Cabernet Franc (3%) - a classic composition that reflects the character of Margaux wines. In the glass, the wine is a deep, dark ruby red with violet reflections. On the nose, it unfolds a complex interplay of aromas of blackcurrant, ripe plum and cherry, accompanied by fine notes of cedar wood, licorice, tobacco and roasted coffee - a typical expression of the careful barrique maturation. On the palate, Château Labégorce 2020 is powerful and elegant at the same time. The tannins are silky but present, while the acidity structure lends the wine freshness and longevity. The medium to full body is carried by dark fruit, fine spice and mineral depth. The finish is long and balanced, with a hint of graphite and elegant wood notes.Château Labégorce 2020 is considered by many critics to be one of the best vintages of the house in the last decade.

Wittmann Westhofener Riesling VDP Erste Lage trocken
The Wittmann Westhofener Riesling comes from the best vineyards of the Westhofener Berg and is an impressive ambassador of its origins. As a VDP Erste Lage, it embodies the finest traditions of Rheinhessen: the distinctive minerality of the limestone soils and the characteristic expression of the vineyard are unmistakable. The grapes are harvested by hand with great care, selecting only the best berries for this Riesling. Low yields, consistent hand-picking and intensive care of the vines create the basis for a wine of the highest precision. The grapes and must are processed particularly gently in order to preserve the pure fruit aromas and minerality of the terroir. A large proportion of the wine is fermented in traditional small wooden barrels, which gives it additional depth, structure and a subtle hint of fullness without compromising its freshness. In the glass, the Wittmann Westhofener Riesling shows clear yellow fruit combined with a fine, smoky minerality. On the palate, it is juicy, elegant and lively, with a noticeable tension and plenty of grip that make the wine particularly harmonious. The long-lasting, salty finish makes the origin and special quality of this Riesling unmistakably clear. This Riesling is an excellent accompaniment to light starters, fresh salads, grilled vegetables or fish dishes. Asian dishes with moderate spices also harmonize excellently. Served at 8-10 °C, it reveals its typical minerality, freshness and fine elegance.

Chateau Meyney Saint-Estephe AOC 2019
