Delheim & Hammel Staying Alive Riesling

Zwei renommierte Weingüter in Familienbesitz, eines aus Stellenbosch in Südafrika und das andere aus der Pfalz in Deutschland, haben sich zu einer einzigartigen Zusammenarbeit zusammengeschlossen, um einen Rieslingwein zu erzeugen, der das Engagement beider Familien für die Rebsorte Riesling und die Bedeutung von Weingütern in Familienbesitz unterstreicht.Der Staying Alive Riesling ist eine Zusammenarbeit zwischen dem Pionierweingut Stellenbosch in Delheim und dem Weingut Hammel in Kirchbaum. Damit wird die Beziehung zwischen der Familie Sperling aus Delheim und den Hammels, die seit 1723 in Kirchbaum Wein herstellen, gefestigt.Der Wein ist das Ergebnis einer vier Jahrzehnte währenden Freundschaft zwischen Christoph Hammel, dem Winzer der neunten Generation im Weingut Hammel, und den Sperlings aus Delheim, wo Christoph in den 1980er Jahren unter dem Delheimer Patriarchen Spatz Sperling seine ersten Schritte als Winzer machte.Nora Sperling Thiel, Miteigentümerin und Direktorin von Delheim, sagt, die Zusammenarbeit mit Christoph Hammel sei der Höhepunkt einer 40-jährigen Beziehung und Freundschaft zwischen zwei Familien, die tief in der Weinwelt Südafrikas und Deutschlands verwurzelt sind.Eine einzigartige Zusammenarbeit erforderte eine einzigartige, eigenständige Marke, und so wurde der Wein Staying Alive genannt, mit einem farbenfrohen Retro-Etikett, als ein gemeinsames Produkt von Delheim und Hammel.

Delheim Cabernet Sauvignon

In der Nase zeigen sich schöne Aromen von Cassis, Pflaume, Zedernholz und Zigarrenschachtel. Im Unterton feine Kräuteraromen. Die Tannine sind schön integriert und haben eine zarte Struktur. Für eine 14-monatige Fasslagerung in zur Hälfte neuen französischen Eichenfässern ist der Delheim Cabernet Sauvignon am Gaumen ausgesprochen rund und mit großer Balance. The Delheim Chardonnay Sur Lie is redolent of crisp apples, zitrus, quince and stone fruits complemented by hints of oak. This Chardonnay from South Africa matured for nine months in French oak casks.On the palate, the white wine shows a marginally creamy texture, a great structure and elegance as well. The finish is slightly mineral. Delheim Chenin Blanc Wild Ferment

Delheim Chenin Blanc Wild Ferment has a fresh colour with a green tint. The wine shows complexity from the natural fermentation with an array of flavours. Grapefruit, orange and white peaches on the nose with subtle savoury and oak flavours. The refined and elegant palate shows restraint, with lengthy tannins and sweet fruit that will complement a variety of dishes. The grapes were handpicked, followed by crushing, de-stemming and gentle pressing. Only two thirds of the juice was settled with enzymes; the balance was taken directly to barrel for fermentation. One third of the blend was fermented cold in concrete tanks, the other two thirds in barrel. Only natural fermentation took place. The wine in the concrete tanks spent 7 months on the lees with the balance aging in French oak barrels for 7 months. A combination of 225 and 500L barrels were used of which 20% were new.Suitable for vegans.

Delheim Gewürztraminer

Delheim Gewürztraminer offers aromas of orange blossom, Turkish Delight and litchi, backed by some zesty citrus notes. These flavours follow through on the palate.The grapes were handpicked, de-stemmed and only lightly pressed. The juice was settled overnight, then racked and inoculated with a selected yeast strain. Fermentation was done at low temperatures. The wine spent four months on the lees, after which it was lightly fined and sterile filtered.Enjoy this 100% Gewürztraminer now. It will also age well for five to six years after vintage.

Delheim Grand Reserve 2015

In contrast to the 2014 vintage, the Delheim Grand Reserve 2015 consists of significantly higher percentages of Merlot. The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, which are predominant in this wine, come from three different vineyards located in the Stellenbosch region. The Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes grow on vineyards located on the slopes of the Klapmutskop Mountains. The vines for this wonderful cuvée are at least 10 years old, and some of them are more than 20 years old, ensuring exceptional depth and structure of the wine. To ensure optimal pre-selection, all the grapes were picked by hand.During the fermentation, the grapes were stirred three times a day to achieve maximal aroma extraction from the grapes. The whole process was carried out at controlled temperatures. After the three grape varieties were aged for 16 months, the maturity of the Merlot was decisive for the blending and therefore for the mixture of the final wine. Finally, the Delheim Grand Reserve matured for another 4 months in used 300-litre oak casks.On the nose, the brilliant, dark ruby-red wine pampers your senses with aromas of mint, cassis and truffle, rounded off by fine nuances of red berries. On the palate, the wine shows wonderful fruity notes which are preserved despite the wine’s immense fullness and power. The Delheim Grand Reserve 2015 goes beautifully with any luxurious meal and is also an ideal accompaniment to tangy cheeses.

Delheim Grand Reserve 2018

In recent years, the Delheim Grand Reserve, the flagship wine from the top South African winery Delheim, has been a guarantor of top ratings from national and international wine critics. This South African red wine was rated in John Platter's Wine Guide with at least 90 points and 4.5 to 5 stars (out of a maximum of 5). And the 2018 vintage of Delheim Grand Reserve is also the result of exceptional winemaking.On the nose, this composition of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 15% Petit Verdot and 10% Merlot is wonderfully intense and multi-faceted. The red wine from Stellenbosch combines notes of dark fruits (with blackberries and black currants predominating) with hints of tobacco and tomato leaf. There are also nuances of violets, blueberries and graphite. On the palate, Delheim Grand Reserve is dry and wonderfully elegantly balanced. The dark fruit aromas and the present tannins interact in a remarkable fashion, complemented by the delicately fresh acidity and a finish with nuances of vanilla that lingers for a good long while. The Bordeaux blend from South Africa matured for 18 months in 300-litre French oak barrels after meticulous manual harvesting of the best, healthiest grapes. Delheim attaches immense importance to using only wood that meets the highest quality standards.The Delheim Grand Reserve 2018 also stands out visually: it is a deep, dark purple in the glass with a cherry-red rim. The makers are justifiably proud of this creation and see a storage potential of up to 15 years. The grapes for Delheim Grand Reserve 2020 were harvested by hand in small batches, with only the best grapes being processed. The juice was fermented in a combination of open-top fermenters and vertical stainless steel tanks. After extraction, the wine matured for 18 months in 300-liter French oak barrels.The complex bouquet of this cuvée of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12.5% Cabernet Franc, 12.5% Petit Verdot and 6% Merlot is dominated by blackberries and blackcurrants, followed by notes of tobacco and tomato leaves, on the palate, this red wine from South Africa is elegantly balanced with aromas of dark red fruit and a soft, smooth finish dark red fruits and a soft, chalky tannin finish that is typical of the region.Enjoy this powerful, fruity blend from the Stellenbosch region at a drinking temperature of 16 to 18 degrees. Delheim Merlot

The grapes for the Delheim Merlot come from vines that are almost 20 years old, located in the Peperboom vineyard. The ‘Peperboom’ (‘pepper plant’ in English) was originally cultivated here. The harvest was carried out in a two-step selection in order to achieve the maximum concentration of tannins and colour. The wine was fermented with selected yeasts in stainless steel tanks at temperatures between 77° and 82.4° F. Subsequently, the wine remained in contact with the skins for another 18 days and then aged for 15 months in French oak casks, of which 20% were new barrels. Its bouquet offers noticeable aromas of tobacco, red fruit, cloves and cinnamon. On the palate, the Delheim Merlot is elegant, with a subtle structure and silky tannins. It is full-bodied, showing a remarkable freshness recalling aromas of bilberries and plums. Another three to four years of ageing in the bottle will further enhance the wine’s qualities and contribute to its optimal stage of maturity. The Delheim Merlot is definitely a genuine delight to enjoy with fried chicken or mushroom soup.
