Print product information sheet

Of all the plantet grapes in South Africa, the shiraz, or syrah, as the French call him, is without a doubt one of the most successful. It has everything to do with the ideal climate of the Cape for this grape. Warm but not too hot, with a good cooling in the afternoon, which seems a bit like the Rhone region, where this wonderful grape originated.

By a short fermentation process at low temperature it gets a strong character, with delicious fruit. Two thirds of the wine then matures about six to eight months in a mix of French and American oak, which makes it well rounded and gets it some extra complexity. That is why wood and fruit remain so perfectly balanced.

Spier Signature Pinotage
By planting the pinotage grapes in rows in a north-easterly direction the grapes are not in the bright afternoon sun. This prevents them to develop a roasted and spicy aroma. And it helps even more that the sea is near, only 8 kilometer away. By low proceeds of 50 hectoliters per hectare the grapes get lots of intensity and the wine has enough strength and depth to let a part of it mature in wooden barrels. Fermentation at no more than 25 ° C ensures plenty of fruit. 40% of the wine matured in French oak barrels or American origin, making this a pleasant vanilla tasty Pinotage without sacrificing the fruit.

The sauvignon loves the coolness of the nearby ocean, located only 25 km away from the vineyards of the sauvignon blanc. Thus, the average temperature here in the summer does not exceed about 22 ° C. In addition, opted for a planting on the southern slopes, which are in the southern hemisphere the coolest. This produces grapes with a wonderful freshness, perfect for a nice Sauvignon. By a slow cool fermentation process it gets his special fruit, so typical of sauvignon blanc. By a maturation on the yeast cells of a few months he will be extra strength and character, with a wonderful, exciting Sauvignon Blanc as a result.Colour: straw-yellowOpen aroma of passionfruit, pear and a hint of citrus, wonderfull aromatic. An open and exotic flavor of green figs, a hint of rhubarb, minerals and flint, with a large fresh finish.

Spier Signature Chenin Blanc
This chenin blanc is made from young vines of five years old, which are perfect for a delicious and refreshing dry wine, with lots of fruit. Only when the stakes get older, the wines get more concentration. By keeping the proceeds low, the wine gets a really nice solid and mineral character. Neil Ellis Groenekloof Shiraz

Driehoek Cederberg Shiraz
The Driehoek vineyards in the Cederberg mountains in South Africa cover an area of just over 12 acres – small, but with the very best terroir. Since production on their own is not worthwhile, the Du Toit family who owns the farm has engaged a winemaker who is renowned far beyond South Africa: their neighbour David Niewoudt, who runs the Cederberg estate. The result is literally a fruitful cooperation: the best terroir combined with the highest art of viticulture. The Driehoek Cederberg Shiraz is a shining example of this.On the nose, the red wine offers attractive fruit aromas such as black cherries and black currants along with sweet notes of vanilla, as well as fine nuances of black pepper and cloves. On the palate, the wine shows liquorice-like tannins and a fresh acidity. The Driehoek Cederberg Shiraz was aged for 15 months in oak casks, giving the wine complexity and length. This Shiraz is elegant and silky. Its finish is accompanied by hints of smoke and paprika. The Driehoek Cederberg Shiraz goes beautifully with aged sirloin steaks, game or oxtail soup.
