The Pinotage vines from the Spier vineyard are planted in rows facing north-east to south-east and are therefore never exposed to the bright afternoon sun. This prevents the grapes from overheating and developing overly spicy aromas. The proximity to the sea, which is only about 8 kilometers away, is also helpful. A low harvest of 50 hectolitres per hectare gives the grapes plenty of intensity and the wine has enough strength and depth to mature in wooden barrels. Fermentation at no more than 25 °C ensures plenty of fruit. 40% of the wine matures in French or American oak barrels, giving this Pinotage a pleasant vanilla flavor without losing the fruit.

Deep cherry red in the glass, the bouquet smells of delicious fresh fruit, cherries and coconut. There are also various spices such as pepper, vanilla, leather and tobacco notes. On the palate, a fresh and refined taste: soft and creamy, with lots of cherry, raspberry, tobacco and a hint of smokiness, robust in the aftertaste, beautiful and spicy.

Spier Wines

Die Spier Wine Farm liegt in der weltberühmten Weinregion Stellenbosch in Südafrika, etwa 50 Kilometer von Kapstadt entfernt. Der Hof hat eine lange Geschichte, die zurückreicht bis ins Jahr 1692. Als einer der ältesten Höfe in der Region ist Spier für seine kapholländischen Giebelhäuser bekannt, eine besondere Form der Architektur. Auf den Ländereien des Weingutes Spier stehen gleich 21 gut erhaltene Häuser. Diese „Gables“ zeugen von den Einflüssen der Gründer aus dem mittelalterlichen Europa und sind eine wahre Attraktion in Südafrika.

Niel Joubert kaufte Spier 1965. Damals war es üblich, Wein für die größeren Genossenschaftskellereien, wie der Stellenbosch Farmers Winery und KWV, zu produzieren. 1971 begann er jedoch mit der Abfüllung seiner eigenen Weinmarken. 1993 ging der Hof in den Besitz von Dick Enthoven über. Unter seiner Führung begann eine umfangreiche Renovierung, um die historischen Gebäude der Farm zu erhalten. Die Wein-Produktion und ein breites Angebot an Freizeitaktivitäten sind heute das Kerngeschäft auf dem Hof. Spier ist in beiden Geschäftsfeldern für seine Nachhaltigkeitsinitiativen bekannt.

Barista Pinotage

A South African taste experience of intense, rich coffee and chocolate aromas with nuances of ripe mulberries, plums and cherries.This dry red wine is also the perfect accompaniment to food. Vinified ready to drink from the start for immediate enjoyment. We recommend 18 °C as the ideal drinking temperature.The Barista Pinotage from the Val De Vie vineyard is made from 100% Pinotage grapes from the Robertson region. The grapes were picked at optimum ripeness in mid-February and divided into different batches and treated in different ways.Certain batches were treated by short heating to optimize color and then returned to the skins for alcoholic fermentation. Other batches were pasteurized and immediately fermented on oak to achieve the dark, rich coffee flavors. Still other batches were fermented conventionally on the skins and pumped over several times during alcoholic fermentation and racked into French oak to complete fermentation. All batches were stabilized by malolactic fermentation in French oak.

Spier Signature Shiraz

The Spier Signature Shiraz comes from carefully tended vineyards in the Stellenbosch region.A short fermentation at low temperatures gives the South African wine a strong character, with delicious fruit flavors. Two thirds of the wine is then matured for around six to eight months in a mixture of French and American oak, which rounds off the wine nicely and gives it extra complexity. Wood and fruit remain perfectly balanced. In the glass, the Spier Signature Shiraz has a bright ruby red color. The nose is dominated by wonderfully intense aromas of sweet fruit, marmalade, rosemary and thyme. There is also a slightly peppery note. Spier Signature Chenin Blanc

This chenin blanc is made from young vines of five years old, which are perfect for a delicious and refreshing dry wine, with lots of fruit.
