Raka Biography Shiraz

The Raka Shiraz is an expressive red wine from the Western Cape in South Africa, which impresses with its powerful structure, complex spiciness and elegant barrel ageing. Made from 100% pure Shiraz and matured for 12 months in French and American oak, this wine is one of the top 100 South African wines. A wine with character and depth that will delight red wine lovers in particular.

The bouquet opens with dark chocolate, spices and a hint of leather - an intense, profound interplay of aromas. On the palate, the Shiraz is complex and elegant, with hints of roasted toast and a fine mocha note on the finish. The grippy tannins provide structure and longevity, while the wine remains pleasantly balanced.

After careful selection, the hand-picked grapes were destemmed and cold macerated for four days before fermentation was initiated with selected yeast strains. Regular pumping over and punching down guaranteed optimal extraction of color, aromas and tannins. After alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, the wine matured for 12 months in a combination of new and multi-seasoned French and American oak barrels, giving it depth and elegant spice.

This Shiraz is the ideal accompaniment to grilled meat, game dishes, rack of lamb or spicy cheese. It also offers an intense taste experience on its own as a meditation wine.

Raka Wines ist ein familiengeführtes Weingut in der malerischen Region Kleinrivier Valley nahe Stanford, im kühlen Walker Bay-Gebiet Südafrikas. Benannt nach dem Fischerboot „Raka“ von Gründer Piet Dreyer, verbindet das Weingut die Leidenschaft fürs Meer mit der Liebe zur Erde. Raka Happiness Sparkling Sauvignon Blanc Brut
The Raka Happiness Sparkling impresses with its light straw yellow color and lively, fresh aroma. This sparkling wine is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc and comes from the prestigious Klein River Valley wine-growing region in South Africa.On the nose, the wine reveals fresh citrus notes of grapefruit and kumquat, complemented by aromas of gooseberry and a hint of passion fruit. On the palate, it is tangy and lively with fruity lime notes and a crisp green apple finish.The grapes were harvested by hand and carefully sorted before processing. They were then placed directly into the press, where the must was left in contact with the skin for eight hours to intensify the aromas. After pressing, the juice was fermented with pure yeasts at around 16°C to ensure optimal fermentation. The wine matured after fermentation with increased yeast contact, giving it additional complexity. After natural clarification by gravity, the wine was filtered and carbonated at a pressure of 5.8 bar (at 20°C), bottled and labeled.The fresh and lively Raka Happiness Sparkling goes perfectly with light starters, seafood, sushi or as an aperitif. Enjoy it well chilled at a recommended drinking temperature of 6-8°C to bring out its fresh fruitiness.

Raka Barrel Select Cabernet Franc
The Raka Cabernet Franc is an expressive red wine from South Africa. The Cabernet Franc grape variety is known for its elegance and herbal-spicy finesse - and shows its fruity, charming side here. Produced in small quantities and with great care, this wine combines depth, structure and pure grape variety characteristics.On the nose, the Raka Cabernet Franc has a seductive aroma of licorice and floral notes, accompanied by a delicate hint of sweet cherries. The palate reveals a soft, harmonious body with the characteristic aroma of cherry jam. The finely integrated tannins provide a supple grip and give the wine structure without overloading it. The finish is round, long and pleasantly spicy.The wine is made purely from 100% Cabernet Franc. The grapes come from the cooler sites of Walker Bay, where the grape variety ripens optimally thanks to the fresh sea breezes and develops its typical aromas.All the grapes were carefully harvested by hand and fermented with pure yeasts after selection. During the five-day fermentation, the must was pumped over the skins three to five times a day to gently extract color, aromas and tannins. After racking and malolactic fermentation, the wine matured for 12 to 14 months in 225-liter French oak barrels, giving it additional complexity and fine wood notes. The wine was only bottled and labeled after this maturation period.This Cabernet Franc is an excellent accompaniment to braised lamb, grilled beef, game dishes or pasta with mushrooms. It is also an ideal accompaniment to medium-bodied cheeses such as Tomme de Savoie or Manchego.

Raka Barrel Select Malbec
This Raka Malbec from South Africa's Klein River Valley delights with an expressive interplay of aromas: The nose reveals intense notes of plums, blackberries and cassis, underpinned by a subtle hint of smoke. The dark fruits are reflected on the palate - the juicy plums provide jammy tannins, which are perfectly balanced by well-integrated oak and an elegant structure. The finish is long, spicy and harmonious.The grapes for this red wine were harvested by hand in the Klein River Ward and carefully sorted directly in the vineyard. A second berry selection was carried out in the cellar before the must was fermented with pure yeasts. During the five-day mash fermentation, the juice was pumped over the skins several times a day and punched down by hand. Once fermentation was complete, the wine was separated from the yeast and transferred to a resting tank. This was followed by malolactic fermentation and a short resting phase before the wine matured in French oak barrels (225 liters, 25% of which were new) for 12 to 14 months.The Raka Malbec is an ideal accompaniment to grilled beef, spicy braised dishes or mature hard cheese. The recommended drinking temperature is 16-18 °C to allow the complex aromas to develop optimally.

The Raka Barrel Select Merlot is a characterful, single-varietal red wine from the Western Cape in South Africa that exploits the full potential of this grape variety. With hand-picked grapes, traditional vinification and careful ageing in French barriques (25% new), this wine combines fruit, spice and structure in an elegant, accessible style - ideal for connoisseurs and Merlot lovers.On the nose, the Raka Barrel Select Merlot reveals intense aromas of ripe black fruit, accompanied by fresh mint and eucalyptus. On the palate, a harmonious interplay of spicy oak, juicy plums and supple tannins unfolds. The structure is clear and well-defined, the finish is long and balanced.After careful manual harvesting and a double selection of the grapes, fermentation took place with pure yeasts with daily flooding and manual punchdowns. The wine then underwent malolactic fermentation and was matured in 225-liter French oak barrels, 25% of which were new. This careful ageing gives it additional complexity without masking the fruit.This red wine is an excellent accompaniment to braised veal, pasta with mushroom cream sauce, lamb chops or mature soft cheese. Rubicon is the flagship wine from Meerlust Wine Estate. This intense and elegant wine shows everything: complexity and depth that are so characteristic of Meerlust wines. The dry red wine from South Africa is full and rich in flavor with creamy, concentrated fruit. Juicy and lively tannins and earthy tones.A super dark ruby red in the glass, almost opaque. A light orange hue shimmers at the edge of the glass. A smoky aroma rises to the nose. Then, with a little air, the bouquet develops into dark berries, yet not overloaded, but fresh and clear.The Rubicon is an intense experience on the palate. The fruity notes from the nose are echoed on the palate and are reminiscent of black cherry and blackcurrant. This is followed by aromas reminiscent of a cigar box. Raka Figurehead
The Raka Figurehead seduces with a multi-layered bouquet of dark fruits such as plum, mulberry and blackcurrant, complemented by earthy notes from the forest floor and a fresh hint of eucalyptus. On the palate, the wine is juicy and full-bodied, supported by aromas of red and black fruits, elegant wood notes and a fine spiciness that lingers on the long finish.This complex cuvée is made from a careful selection of fine grape varieties from the renowned Klein River Ward wine-growing region in South Africa. The grapes were all harvested by hand to ensure the highest quality.In the wine cellar, the grapes were carefully sorted and fermented with pure yeasts. Maceration lasted five days, during which the must was pumped over the skins 3-5 times a day and the cap was punched down to maximize depth of colour and aromatics. After alcoholic fermentation, malolactic fermentation took place, followed by a short resting phase. The red wine then matured for 12 to 14 months in 225-liter French oak barrels before being blended, bottled and labeled.Raka Figurehead is an excellent accompaniment to hearty dishes such as roast beef, lamb and game, as well as mature hard cheeses and mushroom dishes. Meerlust Chardonnay
Im Glas ein heller, lebendiger Platin-Farbton mit grüner Tönung. Komplexes Bouquet von Zitronengras, Limetten, Hafermehl, ausdrucksstarker Mineralität.Am Gaumen ist der südafrikanische Wein von mittlerem Körper, aber mit klarer Säure, Aromen von Kalk, Marzipan, cremige ausgedehnte Eichen-, Apfel- und Birnbaum-Merkmale. Durch eine reine, lineare mineralische Note ergibt sich ein sauberer und langer Abgang.Von Hand gepflückt, als gesamte Partie gepresst und sofort in 300 Liter Fässer aus französischer Eiche gefüllt. Dabei wurden 60% neue Fässer und 40% Fässer, die schon bereits einmal befüllt waren, verwendet. Die Gärung fand in Eiche statt, teils als natürliche und teils als malolaktische Gärung. Die Reifung erfolgte für 12 Monate in Eichenfässern mit gelegentlichem Rühren vor dem Abfüllen in Flaschen.Dieser Weißwein aus der Region Stellenbosch passt perfekt zu gegrilltem Fisch, weißem und rotem Fleisch.

d'Arenberg The Footbolt Shiraz
The pretty nose is very floral with violets, lavender and rose water dancing with the more varietal purple fruits and a touch of cedar adds charming spice.The palate opens with varietal bravado and a mixture of red and purple fruits. Raspberry, blueberry and plum make way for a regional mocha character and an extra layer of complexity that includes graphite and roasted meats. It finishes with a cinnamon spicy lift and fresh, fine grain powdery tannins. Ripeness is well in check and the acid keeps the fresh and juicy palate focused.Before being renamed The Footbolt Shiraz in 1996, the Old Vine Shiraz (as it was then known) was the first wine to use the term ‘Old Vine’. When this became common practice it was altered to honour a racehorse that changed the Osborn family forever. The founder of d’Arenberg, Joseph Osborn was a successful racehorse owner and Footbolt was the pride of his stable. In 1912 he made the hard decision to sell his stable of horses to start d’Arenberg, so it is only fitting they pay homage to Joseph and his prize horse, Footbolt.

De Grendel Shiraz
13 Monate verbrachte dieser Rotwein in amerikanischen und französischen Eichenfässern, hauptsächlich zweiter Füllung. Dadurch zeichnen den Wein besonders weiche Tannine aus. Die Farbe leuchtet purpur mit tiefviolettem Rand. In der Nase dominieren pfeffrige Noten, Cassis und Obstkuchen und der Duft von Veilchen. Am Gaumen zeigen sich Aromen von roten Früchten und Gewürzen. Der De Grendel Shiraz ist ein zarter, aber konzentrierter Rotwein von hervorragender Struktur. Im Abgang üppig und saftig.Der Shiraz von De Grendel eignet sich großartig als Solowein, kann aber auch mit Gerichten wie Lammrücken oder gegrilltem Beef Burger mit Cheddar Käse kombiniert werden.
