The pure varietal Cabernet Sauvignon from the Alto Wine Estate located in the Stellenbosch region is a lovely example of South African viticulture. Winemaker Bertho van der Westhuizen selects only the best grapes to produce this wine. The vines grow on soils consisting of decomposed granite, while the subsoils are clay, giving the Alto Cabernet Sauvignon its finesse and intense character.The wine is a deep dark red in colour, indicating its power. The Alto Cabernet Sauvignon offers aromas of dark fruit, cedar wood and spices in its spicy bouquet, along with mineral notes and nuances of dark chocolate. It is rich and concentrated on the palate, with a balanced structure. The fine tannins and the notes of dark fruit make this wine a wonderful taste experience and simultaneously emphasise its prolonged finish.The Alto Cabernet Sauvignon goes beautifully with steaks or roast lamb. Alto gehört zu den traditionsreichsten Rotwein-Weingütern Südafrikas und liegt an den nördlichen Hängen des Helderbergs in der renommierten Weinregion Stellenbosch. Seine Wurzeln reichen zurück bis ins Jahr 1919, der erste Jahrgang wurde 1922 vinifiziert. Seit über einem Jahrhundert steht Alto für charaktervolle Rotweine, die das besondere Terroir des sogenannten Golden Triangle widerspiegeln. Bemerkenswert ist dabei die Kontinuität des Weinguts: In seiner mehr als 100-jährigen Geschichte haben lediglich fünf Kellermeister den Stil der Weine geprägt – ein Ausdruck der konsequenten Ausrichtung auf Qualität, Tradition und Herkunft.

Die Weinberge erstrecken sich in Höhenlagen zwischen 100 und 500 Metern über dem Meeresspiegel. Verwitterte Granitböden, warme Sonnentage und die kühlenden Meeresbrisen der nahen False Bay schaffen ideale Bedingungen für den Anbau hochwertiger Rotweinsorten. Das Herzstück des Weinguts bildet dabei besonders der Cabernet Sauvignon, der seit Jahrzehnten den unverwechselbaren Stil von Alto prägt. Im Sortiment finden sich vor allem kraftvolle Rotweine wie Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, der legendäre Alto Rouge sowie exklusive Cuvées, bekannt für Tiefe, Eleganz und hervorragendes Reifepotenzial.

Heute führt Kellermeister Bertho van der Westhuizen die Philosophie des Hauses fort. The Kanonkop Cabernet Sauvignon is a single-varietal top red wine from Stellenbosch in South Africa, vinified by star winemaker Abrie Beeslaar. The vines, which are over 30 years old, grow on weathered granite and Hutton soils and produce exceptionally concentrated grapes with a low yield.After traditional mash fermentation in open concrete fermenters and manual punching down of the mash, the red wine matured for 24 months in French oak (50% new). The result is a Cabernet Sauvignon of great depth, structure and elegance.It shines a deep garnet red in the glass.
