Madame de Beaucaillou Haut-Médoc 2022

The Madame de Beaucaillou Haut-Médoc 2022 comes from Bordeaux and is produced by the renowned Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, which was classified as a deuxième cru in the 1855 classification. The grapes come from selected plots within the Haut-Médoc appellation and are vinified with the same care and precision as the estate’s top wines. The cuvée consists of 66% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 11% Petit Verdot, and is aged in barrels for 12 months.

In the glass, the wine displays a deep, dark ruby red color. The bouquet is intense and complex, with aromas of black currants, blackberries, and ripe plums, complemented by floral notes of violets as well as subtle hints of graphite, spices, and fine oak. On the palate, it is powerful yet elegant, with juicy dark fruit, remarkable concentration, and fresh, well-integrated acidity. The tannins are fine and precise, lending the wine structure without compromising its approachability. The long finish is accompanied by mineral nuances, subtle toasted aromas, and a delicate spiciness.

In terms of quality, the 2022 vintage ranks among the most successful Bordeaux vintages of recent years. Madame de Beaucaillou impresses with its excellent value for money and offers remarkable depth and elegance for a wine in this price range. It also has an aging potential of about ten to fifteen years.

On the culinary front, this Haut-Médoc is a versatile dining companion. It pairs particularly well with beef tenderloin, entrecôte, rack of lamb, game dishes, and braised beef. It also pairs superbly with hearty mushroom dishes, aged hard cheeses, and savory dishes featuring Mediterranean herbs. Its combination of fruit, spice, and structure also makes it an excellent companion for grilled meats and aromatic stews.

Château Charmail, located in the north of the Médoc, is the neighbor of Sociando-Mallet and has an exceptionally good terroir close to the Gironde. Formerly dormant, this estate woke up a few decades ago and produces fresh and fruity wines that have propelled Château Charmail into the top league of the Left Bank. It is important to bear in mind that the prices for this grape juice are still more than moderate, making Charmail one of the absolute price-performance winners in the whole of Bordeaux. The 2019 vintage is also exceptionally successful and is considered part of the century trilogy (2018-2020).A wonderfully deep ruby red glows in the glass. On the nose, the typically delicate fruit of Château Charmail, with cassis, blackberries, redcurrants and a hint of elderberry. On the palate, the red and blueberry character intensifies, framed by tobacco, licorice, leather and a little graphite, as well as mint and cedar. Everything is very fresh and harmonious, with good structure and race and some residual sweetness, which balances wonderfully with the intense fruit. Although the tannins are present, they are not over-represented, but appear polished and polished. The finish is extremely long.Château Charmail 2019 is a winner in its price category and scores even higher. Excellent for cellaring, it is already ready to drink after 1-2 hours of decanting.Weinwisser: 93-95/100Suckling: 91/100Decanter: 91/100Gabriel: 17/20

Chateau Poujeaux Moulis-en-Medoc AOC 2020
Château Poujeaux 2020 is an outstanding wine from the Moulis-en-Médoc appellation, one of the smaller but highly regarded regions on the left bank of Bordeaux. The estate, whose origins date back to the Middle Ages, is known for its consistent quality work and its ability to produce wines with strong character and longevity year after year. The 2020 vintage benefited from a balanced climate with warm days, cool nights and an ideal ripening period, resulting in excellent concentration and elegance in the grapes. The cuvée of the 2020 vintage consists predominantly of Cabernet Sauvignon (54%), supplemented by Merlot (40%) and Petit Verdot (6%). This classic Bordeaux composition reflects the terroir character of the gravelly soils in Moulis particularly well and ensures complexity and depth. In the glass, Château Poujeaux 2020 is an intense, deep ruby red. The nose reveals a multi-layered bouquet of dark berries, particularly cassis, black cherry and blackberry, accompanied by floral notes such as violets as well as cedar, tobacco, cocoa and a hint of graphite - typical of the Left Bank style. On the palate, the wine impresses with density and elegance. The tannins are finely polished, the texture silky, and yet the Poujeaux 2020 has a powerful structure. The fruit aromas are concentrated but not overripe, accompanied by fresh acidity and a beautiful mineral note. The finish is long, harmonious and shows very good ageing potential. The 2020 vintage is considered by wine critics to be one of the best in the winery's recent history. James Suckling awarded it 93 points and praised its "precise structure, purity and depth". Wine Advocate and Vinous also emphasized the balance of power, freshness and elegance. The wine is already very appealing when young, but has the potential to mature for 15 to 20 years, during which it will continue to grow in complexity.Château Poujeaux 2020 is a classic but modern Bordeaux with depth, structure and finesse. It combines the typical virtues of a Médoc wine - power, elegance and ageability - while at the same time displaying an accessible fruit and finesse that makes it very attractive even when young. An excellent representative of its terroir with a convincing price-performance ratio.
