The Hall Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon is a red wine full of character from the USA, more precisely from the renowned Paso Robles wine-growing region on California's Central Coast. The region is known for its warm, sunny climate with cool nights, which provides ideal conditions for growing Cabernet Sauvignon and results in fully ripe grapes with an intense aroma and rather mild acidity. Hall Ranch established itself in the early 1990s as a new winery that wanted to bring the pioneering spirit of California into the wine glass with a fresh spirit.In the glass, the wine is a deep ruby red. The nose reveals aromas of dark berries, particularly blackcurrant and ripe cherry, complemented by subtle spicy notes, slight hints of vanilla, cocoa and toasted wood, which indicate that the wine has been aged in barrels. On the palate, the Hall Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon is full-bodied and juicy, with pronounced fruit, well-integrated, soft tannins and a pleasant structure. The finish is round and of medium length, with a good balance between fruit, spice and a subtle woody character.Overall, this wine represents good to very good quality in the style of a modern Californian Cabernet Sauvignon: fruit-driven, accessible and yet with sufficient depth and structure. We are convinced of this grape juice as a "total work of art", because rarely has a wine impressed us so much with its harmony and coherent appearance. It is suitable both for solo enjoyment and as an accompaniment to hearty dishes such as grilled meat, beef, lamb or savory dishes and offers an exceptionally good price-pleasure ratio.

The Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley embodies the pursuit of quality and terroir expression with which the traditional Joseph Phelps winery was founded by Joe Phelps over 30 years ago. The Opus One of the 2013 vintage had already set standards, and that despite the fascinatingly high quality of these wines. Opus One, the Californian high-flyer and joint child of wine legends Mondavi and Rothschild, is now producing an incomparable series of top vintages in succession. 2018 does not break this streak, but seamlessly continues and even surpasses some of the previous years.This is due in particular to the mild and very consistent weather conditions in 2018, which, apart from a little rain before bud break, were ideal and above all did not show the excessive heat that has often been seen in Napa Valley recently.The Opus One 2018 consists of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Petit Verdot, 5% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Malbec and was aged for 17 months in new French oak barrels.Creamy, deep and heavenly fruity are associations that are often heard in connection with Opus One. The finish is almost infinitely long.As is so often the case with Californians, the Opus One 2018 also manages to show a cellaring potential of several decades, but is still ready to drink very early. Pym Rae Napa Valley 2018

The winery was founded by the brilliant actor Robin Williams, who named it after the middle names of his children Pym and Rae. In 2016, the Bordelais-based Tesseron family bought this vineyard in Napa Valley, located on Mount Veeder, which only covers around 8 hectares. Alfred Tesseron, one of the grand seigneurs in Bordeaux, had already taken Château Pontet-Canet in Pauillac to unimagined heights by being the first producer in Bordeaux to introduce biodynamics and resolutely and rigidly adhering to the principle of "back to nature". This was done in his very individual way, always striving for the very highest quality.You can expect nothing less from PYM-RAE. In 2016, purely organic work was immediately introduced here too and the son of the technical director of Pontet-Canet, Thomas Comme, is in charge. The consultant is star oenologist Michel Rolland, himself now a legend. "Manual work" is the motto at PYM-RAE; the vines are on average 29 years old and the grapes and must are treated with exceptional care in the cellar. No pumps are used and extraction is very gentle, not least because of the extremely small vats.PYM-RAE is composed of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc and thus corresponds to a classic Bordeaux cuvée. Hand-picked and matured for 16 months in 70% new French oak barrels and 30% in small concrete tanks, PYM-RAE is given the finishing touches.The result is a stunning grape juice of majestic proportions, of which unfortunately only a few bottles find their way to Europe.The wine is characterized by a great deal of fruit, elegance and silky tannins, with incredible depth and opulence. In addition to the plum, blackberry and blueberry aromas, paired with cassis, there are also notes of violets, chocolate, cigar box, mint, cocoa and olives.This "American Beauty" with French roots is best enjoyed solo over the next 40 years, or with a good steak or game board. Very curious wine lovers should decant it for about 1 1/2 hours beforehand. Incidentally, "solo" does not mean that you can't share the wine with good friends!
