The wines that Agustin and Valeria Huneeus have been producing since 1989 at their Quintessa winery in Rutherford, in the heart of Napa Valley, could actually be merciless competitors to Opus One, Napa's flagship. But Quintessa is taking a less publicized, quieter approach, so Quintessa still flies "under the radar" in terms of name recognition. Wine connoisseurs benefit from this, as the quality of this grape juice is "outstanding", but the price, compared to Opus One, is not yet.

And the 2019 Quintessa has also once again become a wine trouvaille, which was remarkably rated 99/100 points by James Suckling and received the high score of 100/100 points from WineEnthusiast.

91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Cabernet Franc, 2% Merlot, 2% Carménère and 1% Petit Verdot make up the cuvée, which matured in 60% new French oak for 22 months.

The nose shows an incredibly vibrant picture of the elements of flowers, forest, fruit and earth. Spices, walnut, black fruit, sweet cherry, cassis and wood complement each other to form a complex, extremely sensual whole, with silky tannins, good fat, great structure and an eternally lingering echo.

This wine offers seemingly endless aromas to be discovered, but is not "cerebral" in the sense that it is incomprehensible. It is too seductive for that and it is all the more remarkable that it is already accessible and ready to drink now, but will probably remain so for another 30 years.

An ideal gift for wine connoisseurs and those who simply appreciate outstanding grape juice at its finest.

Quintessa ist eine ausgesprochen exklusive Winery in Rutherford, im Napa Valley, direkt gelegen am legendären Silverado Trail.

Die Eheleute Agustin und Valeria Huneeus kauften das Land im Jahre 1990, nachdem Agustin Huneeus vorher u. a. in seinem Heimatland Chile in leitender Funktion bis 1971 Concha y Toro zum größtem Weinproduzenten Chiles ausgebaut hatte.

26 verschiedene Parzellen bepflanzt mit Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot und Carménère machen den Wein aus; geerntet wird frühmorgens, die Gärung findet in Stahltanks und Beton statt. Die Weine der einzelnen Lagen reifen dann für etwa 24 Monate in französischer Eiche. Erst danach erfolgt das finale Blending, also die Mischung des Cuvées. Abschließend lagert der Wein dann noch ein Jahr auf der Flasche, bis er schließlich das Weingut verläßt.

Quintessa kann es locker mit den besten Weinen Amerikas aufnehmen. Es braucht sich nicht vor so manchem gehypten und manchmal auch überteuerten Kalifornier verstecken, zumal die Preise auf Geheimtipp-Niveau liegen und angesichts der angebotenen, maximalen Qualität, immer noch als moderat bezeichnet werden müssen.

Die Quintessa Winery, gelegen in Rutherford im Napa Valley, ist inzwischen mehr als ein Insider-Tipp für Liebhaber kalifornischer Weine. Hier wird auf der Basis von organic farming und Biodynamie ein Bordeaux-style Blend durch die Familie Huneeus bereitet, der sich zur Spitze des Amerikanischen Weinbaus zählen darf, ohne allerdings die Brieftasche des Weinliebhabers so zu belasten wie die bekannteren Adressen. Der Quintessa aus dem warmen Jahr 2017 reflektiert die nahezu idealen Gegebenheiten, unter denen die Trauben dieses Top-Blend aus 92% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot, 3% Carmenére und 1% Petit Verdot ausreifen durften. Er reifte 22 Monate in französischen Eichenfässern, mit einem Neufassanteil von 76%.Ein kraftvoller und dennoch sehr eleganter Rebsaft, der in der Nase mit dunklen Kirschen, Cassis und dunkler Schokolade besticht. Dieses setzt sich am Gaumen fort, unterstützt von Anklängen von Thymian, Salbei, Zimt, Zeder und etwas Weihrauch, alles in einem feinen Rahmen von dunklen und roten Früchten und Tabak-Aromen. Der Nachhall ist ausgesprochen lang, geprägt von seidigen und sehr geschliffenen Tanninen. Der Rotwein zeigt eine tolle Struktur und Dynamik mit viel Eleganz und Finesse.Wie viele der sonnigen Kalifornier ist auch der Quintessa 2017 bereits jetzt schon trinkreif, sollte aber mindestens 1-2 Stunden vorher dekantiert werden. So hat jeder Jahrgang seinen eigenen Charakter und seine individuellen Eigenschaften.Beim 2018er Quintessa lautet das Stichwort: Harmonie. Dieser Rebsaft ist immer ein Monolith der Frucht und der Sonne; hinzu kommt aber in 2018 noch eine unglaubliche Ausgewogenheit und Balance seines Wesens, die ihn ein weiteres Mal in die oberste Liga im Napa Valley katapultieren.Das Wetter in 2018 war in Rutherford, der Heimat des Quintessas, frei von jedweden Extremen und durchgängig mild. Der Herbst, die Erntezeit, lies allen Raum um präzise zur richtigen Zeit zu ernten, ohne jeden Druck, so dass eine perfekte Reife gewährleistet werden konnte.Intensive Aromen von Cassis, Schwarzkirsche, Himbeeren, etwas Salbei und Thymian, dunkle Schokolade, Graphit und frischer Tabak verbinden sich mit einem Korb von roten und schwarzen Früchten zu einem extrem harmonischen Gesamtkunstwerk. „Das ist wirklich ein großartiger Opus One in the making.“ Weinkritikerin Lisa Perrotti-Brown schwärmt in Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate vom legendären kalifornischen Rotwein im Jahrgang 2019 und adelt ihn mit 97 bis 99 Punkten. „Anmutig“ nennt James Suckling den Opus One 2019 und verleiht 99 Punkte. Der US-Rotwein, hinter dem Robert Mondavi und Baron Philippe de Rothschild sowie ihr gemeinsames Streben nach dem perfekten Wein stehen, ist im Jahrgang 2019 eine besondere Offenbarung.Die Komposition aus dem Napa Valley besteht aus 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, je 6% Petit Verdot und Cabernet Franc sowie 2% Malbec. 19 Monate reifte der Blend aus den USA in neuem französischem Barrique. Das Ergebnis: Ein unverwechselbares Fest für die Sinne. Das fesselnde Bouquet umfasst intensive Noten von schwarzer Pflaume, Heidelbeere und schwarzer Johannisbeere, wunderbar harmonierend mit Noten von getrockneten Rosenblättern und schwarzem Pfeffer, getragen von mineralischen Untertönen. Perrotti-Brown urteilt: „Springt aus dem Glas mit Noten von Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte, Sauerkirschen, Maulbeeren und frischen schwarzen Johannisbeeren sowie einem Hauch von Lakritz, welken Rosen, Szechuanpfeffer und Eisenerz.“Am Gaumen trocken und mit einer weichen, seidigen Textur, umrahmt von meisterhaft geschliffenen, perfekt integrierten Tanninen. „Das Mundgefühl ist wirklich unglaublich“, sagt Winemaker Michael Silacci. „Fantastische Länge und Struktur des Weins, mit Dichte und Fokus. Wunderbare Frucht“, urteilt Suckling, während Perrotti-Brown etwas mehr ins Detail geht: „Vollmundig, der Gaumen ist vollgepackt mit saftigen schwarzen, blauen und roten Früchten, umrahmt von samtigen Tanninen und Hintergrundfrische, die mit einer überzeugenden erdigen/mineralischen Note ausklingen.“

The winery was founded by the brilliant actor Robin Williams, who named it after the middle names of his children Pym and Rae. In 2016, the Bordelais-based Tesseron family bought this vineyard in Napa Valley, located on Mount Veeder, which only covers around 8 hectares. Alfred Tesseron, one of the grand seigneurs in Bordeaux, had already taken Château Pontet-Canet in Pauillac to unimagined heights by being the first producer in Bordeaux to introduce biodynamics and resolutely and rigidly adhering to the principle of "back to nature". This was done in his very individual way, always striving for the very highest quality.You can expect nothing less from PYM-RAE. In 2016, purely organic work was immediately introduced here too and the son of the technical director of Pontet-Canet, Thomas Comme, is in charge. The consultant is star oenologist Michel Rolland, himself now a legend. "Manual work" is the motto at PYM-RAE; the vines are on average 29 years old and the grapes and must are treated with exceptional care in the cellar. No pumps are used and extraction is very gentle, not least because of the extremely small vats.PYM-RAE is composed of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc and thus corresponds to a classic Bordeaux cuvée. Hand-picked and matured for 16 months in 70% new French oak barrels and 30% in small concrete tanks, PYM-RAE is given the finishing touches.The result is a stunning grape juice of majestic proportions, of which unfortunately only a few bottles find their way to Europe.The wine is characterized by a great deal of fruit, elegance and silky tannins, with incredible depth and opulence. In addition to the plum, blackberry and blueberry aromas, paired with cassis, there are also notes of violets, chocolate, cigar box, mint, cocoa and olives.This "American Beauty" with French roots is best enjoyed solo over the next 40 years, or with a good steak or game board. Very curious wine lovers should decant it for about 1 1/2 hours beforehand. Incidentally, "solo" does not mean that you can't share the wine with good friends!

Auch im Jahrgang 2017 haben die Macherinnen und Macher von Freemark Abbey einen Cabernet Sauvignon komponiert, der von der internationalen Weinkritik gefeiert wird.Der Rotwein aus den USA duftet eindrucksvoll vielschichtig nach Brombeeren, Kirschen und Milchschokolade. Das Bouquet wird darüber hinaus bereichert durch Noten von Zedern und Kräutern der Provence sowie süßlichen Eichennoten.Lisa Perrotti-Brown vergibt in Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate 92 Punkte für den Freemark Abbey Cabernet. Zeigt einige Haselnuss- und Walnuss-Untertöne. Sehr fein abgestimmt.“Mehr als zwei Jahre reifte dieser edle Wein aus den USA im Eichenholz. Freemark Abbey, etwas mehr als 100 Kilometer nördlich von San Francisco gelegen, setzte dabei zu einem kleinen Anteil neue Fässer ein.

Awarded 94 points by James Suckling, 93 points in Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 95 points in Decanter, and 92 points in WineEnthusiast, the Brunello is a feast for the senses and another outstanding example of why Poggio Antico has been considered an iconic winemaker in Tuscany for decades.The Sangiovese bouquet is fascinatingly intense and multi-faceted. "Aromas reminiscent of undergrowth, rubbed botanical herbs, wild roses and wild berries pour from the glass," according to Kerin O'Keefe in the Wine Enthusiast, while James Suckling writes of a pure cherry, berry and floral character with underlying notes of cedar. Decanter says, "Smells quite savory of coffee, dark chocolate, bitter orange peel and some Christmas spices, cloves and cinnamon," adding that the savory spice is in the foreground.On the palate, this fine red wine from Tuscany is terrifically elegant, with a medium to full body. In addition, there is a wonderful depth and variety of aromas. The elegant palate offers dried cherries, licorice and ground cloves in a complex interplay with fine-grained tannins, as O'Keefe writes. The Wine Advocate highlights lots of fresh fruit and the soft and supple tannins, while Decanter, in turn, recognizes tension and precision on the palate, well-integrated tannins and a lovely sweetness at the start. The long, aromatic finish completes this taste experience.This single-varietal Sangiovese from the 30 hectares of picturesquely situated sites of Poggio Antico is outstanding. A major contributing factor is that the grapes ripen about 500 meters above sea level on chalky, stony soils. The harvest yields are deliberately severely limited. The Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino is aged for 30 months in Slavonian oak barrels, followed by another 18 months in the bottle.A superb classic of Italian winemaking. Enjoy the Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino with red meat or game dishes, preferably with mushrooms. A strong cheese is also an excellent companion for the Brunello - we recommend, for example, a Pecorino from Tuscany or a Toma Piemontese. Tip: Enjoy this Brunello after 2024.

"The Signature Cabernet-Shiraz" is a special red wine from the Yalumba winery in Australia. The cuvée was made from the Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz grape varieties and matured for 21 months in oak barrels before being bottled. The work of the renowned winemaker Kevin Glastonbury is particularly noteworthy here.The color of the wine is deep dark and shows an intense purple hue with vivid reflections. On the nose, "The Signature Cabernet-Shiraz" develops a complex aroma spectrum characterized by dark berries such as blackcurrants, blackberries and cassis. These fruity aromas are complemented by notes of vanilla, chocolate, licorice and spices such as cinnamon and pepper, which are the result of long maturation in wooden barrels.On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and balanced.
