This red wine from South Africa has a bouquet redolent of ripe red and black berries and plums as well, complemented by lovely nuances of eucalyptus and mint. This very fruity Merlot is juicy on the palate, with nicely integrated tannins, a fine spice and light notes of wood.

Twenty per cent of this wine matured for 8 to 10 months in French oak casks; the remaining 80% of the wine was aged in stainless steel tanks. You’ll enjoy discovering the Spier Signature Merlot with lamb dishes or vegetarian

By planting the pinotage grapes in rows in a north-easterly direction the grapes are not in the bright afternoon sun. This prevents them to develop a roasted and spicy aroma. And it helps even more that the sea is near, only 8 kilometer away. By low proceeds of 50 hectoliters per hectare the grapes get lots of intensity and the wine has enough strength and depth to let a part of it mature in wooden barrels. Fermentation at no more than 25 ° C ensures plenty of fruit. 40% of the wine matured in French oak barrels or American origin, making this a pleasant vanilla tasty Pinotage without sacrificing the fruit.

Of all the plantet grapes in South Africa, the shiraz, or syrah, as the French call him, is without a doubt one of the most successful. It has everything to do with the ideal climate of the Cape for this grape. Warm but not too hot, with a good cooling in the afternoon, which seems a bit like the Rhone region, where this wonderful grape originated. By a short fermentation process at low temperature it gets a strong character, with delicious fruit. Lanzerac Merlot
Lanzerac Merlot
The grapes for Lanzerac Merlot come from vineyards located in the Jonkershoek Valley near Stellenbosch. These vineyards are divided into four different parcels of land with vines that are between 9 and 17 years old, covering an area of 20.31 acres. This terroir consists of deep red, decomposed granite soils and is located between 125 and 400 metres above sea level. After arrival in the cellar, the grapes were selected by hand and destemmed. Before they were gently pressed, the loose grapes underwent a second selection by hand. Subsequently, the grapes were fermented in stainless steel tanks with pumping over twice a day, allowing an optimal extraction of colour and aromas. The Merlot matured for 12 months in second- and third-fill French oak casks. The optimal point of the ripening process was reached by regular racking. This appetizing Lanzerac Merlot has a lot to offer and leaves nothing to be desired. On the nose, it offers concentrated aromas of black fruit, along with sweet notes of vanilla and spicy aromas. The tannins give the wine more complexity, gently underpinning aromas of plums, black cherries, cooked strawberry purée and dark chocolate, finely rounded off by a long, integrated finish. The Lanzerac Merlot goes beautifully with veal chops and portabello mushrooms, gnocchi in a red pepper sauce with crispy pancetta or with a creamy gruyere and parmesan cheese risotto.
