The Villa de Corullón 2023 from Descendientes de J. Palacios represents the elegance and complexity of the northern Spanish region of Bierzo. This red wine is made from 100% Mencía grapes and is an impressive demonstration of the strong character and subtlety of this variety in this region.

The vineyards are located on steep slopes with slate soils, which give the wine its distinctive minerality and fresh, lively structure. The grapes are carefully harvested to preserve the natural aromas and expressiveness of the site.

Villa de Corullón Menica 2023 is a clear ruby red in the glass. The nose is dominated by aromas of red and black fruits, floral notes of violets, subtle spices and a hint of aniseed, accompanied by a fine mineral note. On the palate, the wine shows balance, elegance and depth, with ripe tannins and a long-lasting, harmonious finish.

This red wine is an excellent accompaniment to grilled lamb, mushroom risotto or aromatic game dishes such as venison or roe deer. Its complex aromas come into their own at a drinking temperature of 16-18 °C.

The Villa de Corullón Menica 2023 is an expressive ambassador of Bierzo and impresses with its fine minerality, fruity precision and elegant length.

Grapes are picked up by hand and afterwards selected, grain by grain at sorting tables. Fermentation of destalked grapes takes place in new small stainless steel tanks to obtain the best colour extraction. Malolactic fermentation took place in new French Allier oak.Aging: During 20 months in new French oak barrel followed by 18 months in the bottle.

It is made from 100% Mencía, the leading regional grape variety, which is known for its freshness, finesse and aromatic complexity.The vineyards are located on steep terraces with slate soils, which give the wines from Bierzo their typical minerality and elegance. The grapes are carefully harvested in order to preserve the quality and typical character of the grape variety as much as possible.Villa de Corullón has an intense ruby red color in the glass. The nose reveals a complex interplay of aromas of red and black berries, floral notes of violets, spicy nuances and a hint of aniseed, complemented by a fine, earthy minerality. On the palate, the wine is balanced and elegant, with ripe tannins, a pleasant structure and harmonious depth. Ripe fruit aromas combine with floral hints and mineral freshness to create a long, round finish.This Mencía is an excellent accompaniment to grilled lamb chops, aromatic mushroom dishes or a creamy mushroom risotto. Game dishes such as venison or roe deer also benefit from its aromatic complexity. The aromas develop best at a drinking temperature of 16-18 °C.

There are quite a few people who claim that Aalto wines represent the best of Spanish viticulture in the Ribera del Duero region. Every year, the Aalto wines are once again compared to those produced by the Vega Sicilia estate, and the Aalto wines often win by a nose. For more than 30 years, Mariano García Fernández, the founder of the Aalto winery, was responsible for the wines produced by the Vega Sicilia estate, of which he was the Technical Director. With his own Bodega Aalto, García Fernández wants to achieve the best result without losing respect for the grapes. In creating his wines, he strives for the maximum expression of the terroir, uniting structure and power with elegance and complexity. The Aalto was characterised by a warm winter’s end and an early spring with early flowering. Sufficient rain in summer and a dry autumn led to grapes of an optimal quality. The grapes come mainly from very old vines that are up to 80 years old.The pure varietal Tempranillo (in the Burgos and Valladolid region better known as Tinto Fino) is a cherry red in colour. The wine offers fine notes of spices on the nose, along with light flavours of well-integrated wood. On the palate, the Aalto is wonderfully fresh and dense. Notes of tobacco, coffee and subtle aromas of liquorice reveal the unique style so typical of this Aalto. Due to its soft and round character, the wine can already be enjoyed young. Owing to the soft, enclosing tannins and a good acidity, the Aalto will increase its complexity over the coming years. The ageing of the wine in half new and half used barrels ofAmerican and French oak ensures that it will store well in the bottle. Enjoy the Aalto with a lovely beef roast or simply on its own in front of the fireplace.

The Vina Tondonia Reserva from the legendary López de Heredia family winery is a flagship of classic Rioja tradition. It is 100% “Tinta del País”, aged for 16 months in French and American oak barrels.Dark, deep and intense in colour, with a cherry-red rim. On the nose, it is heady but elegant and pleasant, with plenty of ripe black fruit such as plum and blackberry. In addition, mineral hints and quality sweet spices combine with black chocolate, ripe fruit and plum kernel.On the palate, it is full-bodied and structured, with a powerful and refreshing back taste of medicinal herbs and pine. Top quality tannin with an excellent finish of very ripe black fruit, cocoa and fresh herbal hints. Bodegas RODA has diversified into Ribera del Duero. After twenty years’ experience in D.O.Ca Rioja, RODA wanted to apply its knowledge and experience to a diversification into D.O. Ribera del Duero, creating Bodegas LA HORRA. The new company will take advantage of the existing synergies in techniques, management, R&D&I and commercial distribution of its wines - SELA, RODA, RODA I, CIRSION, and of its olive oils, DAURO and AUBOCASSA, products available in 55 countries.

Aber was heißt hier schon Zweitwein. Wer diesen Tempranillo öffnet, merkt schnell, dass dies einmal mehr eine erstklassige Kreation ist. 93+ Punkte in Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate für den Vega Sicilia Macán Clásico 2019 sprechen für sich.Herrlich anregende Düfte von Brombeeren und Pflaumen prägen das Bouquet, wunderbar harmonierend mit Noten von Schokolade und einer feinen Würze. „Reichhaltige, aber raffinierte und vielschichtige Nase, die dunkle Pflaumen, getrocknete Erdbeeren, Oliven, Kakaobohnen und einige herzhafte mediterrane Gewürze entfaltet“, schreibt US-Weinkritiker James Suckling, der für den Macán Clásico 2019 stolze 93 Punkte vergibt.Am Gaumen ist der reinsortige Tempranillo (von mehr als drei Jahrzehnten alten Rebstöcken) trocken und kraftvoll, herrlich saftig und fruchtbetont. Der Wein „hat einen moderaten Alkoholgehalt von 14 %, eine milde Säure und eine gute Frische und Ausgewogenheit“, urteilt Luis Gutiérrez im Wine Advocate. „2019 war ein trockenes und warmes Jahr, in dem sie eine sanfte Weinbereitung durchführten, um harte Tannine zu vermeiden. Die Nase ist reif ohne Übermaß, und die Eiche ist elegant integriert.Der Macán Clásico 2019 wurde für etwa 12 Monate größtenteils in neuen und gebrauchten französischen Eichenfässern ausgebaut. Aber auch 5 Prozent amerikanische Eiche kamen zum Einsatz, und etwa ein Fünftel des Weins reifte im Edelstahltank. Das Weingut selbst empfiehlt, den Tempranillo bei einer Trinktemperatur von 18 Grad zu genießen. Suckling rät: „Drink after 2024.” Dieser Rotwein aus der Rioja ist schon jetzt ein Hochgenuss, kann aber auch noch 10 bis 15 Jahre gelagert werden.

The Clio from Bodegas El Nido has been around since 2002. Behind this Spanish red wine from the Jumilla region are the Gil family and the renowned Australian winemaker Chris Ringland. Together they have produced an outstanding creation. This is demonstrated by the fact that the Clio has always received 90 or significantly more points in Robert Parker's Wine Advocate since 2002, the "first edition" of the wine. The most recent score was 93 points for the 2019 vintage.The Clio from Bodegas El Nido has a wonderfully intense aroma of blueberries, blackcurrants and blackberries. There are also complex notes of mushrooms and leather as well as balsamic and mineral tones that enrich the bouquet. The long ageing in wood rounds off the bouquet with notes of vanilla as well as espresso and chocolate.On the palate, this blend of 70% Monastrell and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon is dry, powerful and full-bodied, with an exceptional concentration of fruit. Outstanding freshness and a remarkably long finish. The tannins are masterfully integrated.The impenetrably deep red Clio Bodegas El Nido matured for 26 months in French and American oak barriques. Old vines, meticulous grape harvesting and excellent winemaking skills: everything is just right with this Spanish red wine.
