Protos 27 Tinto DO

The Protos 27 Tinto is an anniversary wine. Bodegas Protos is thus celebrating its 90th anniversary. In 1927, 11 winegrowers dared to plant vines in the Ribera del Duero region, which was still considered completely unreal and unsuitable at the time, and found a winery. They called it Bodega Ribera Duero.
It was not until 55 years later that the name of the winery was dropped to pave the way for the establishment of the DO Ribera del Duero. As it was the first winery to be established, there was probably nothing more obvious than to name itself Protos, "the first", from the Greek.
The first vintage, 2014, is a tribute to the work of the founders. By using specially developed yeasts from their own research, they are breaking new ground with this wine. The retro label and modern ageing of the wine are an impressive combination of tradition and modernity.

The grapes for the Protos 27 Tinto come from Tempranillo vines, some of which are 70 years old. In addition to alcoholic fermentation at 25 degrees Celsius, malolactic fermentation took place in new French oak barrels. The wine then underwent 16 months of ageing in new French barrels and 12 months of bottle ageing.

On the nose, there is plenty of fruit of black raspberry, blackberry and cherry aromas. Cocoa and tobacco notes are just as impressive as vanilla and chocolate. Lots of power, complexity, elegance and balance on the palate. The finely integrated tannins make the wine appear fresh and creamy. The harmonious interplay of all components is what makes this wine so unique.

Enjoy the Protos 27 Tinto with grilled meat of all kinds. It is also an excellent companion for hearty stews or on its own for a relaxed evening in front of the TV.

Protos Reserva DO
The Protos Reserva comes from vineyards in the Ribera del Duero that are over 50 years old. The grapes are harvested by hand. This magnificent Reserva is made from 100% grapes of the Tinta del Pais variety, commonly known as Tempranillo. After the grapes were subjected to further manual selection and pressed, fermentation began on the skins at a temperature of 28 degrees Celsius. The fermentation process lasted a total of 24 days. The wine then matured for 18 months, 2/3 in French and 1/3 in American oak barrels, before continuing its development for a further 24 months in the bottle. The color of the Protos Reserva is an intense dark red with almost black reflections towards the rim. On the nose, there are clear notes of black fruit, as well as toasted and spicy notes. Cinnamon, tobacco, cocoa, vanilla and wet gravel can also be perceived. Black pepper, rosemary and laurel reflect the spicy notes. Overall, the wine leaves a complex and elegant impression. On the palate, the Protos Reserva is incredibly intense and powerful. Fruitiness is complemented by roasted aromas and spicy notes. The well-integrated acidity and rounded tannins support the muscular structure, which guarantees the wine a long finish. Already a real pleasure today, the Protos Reserva will also prove its potential in later years.Braised venison, pheasant with grapes, braised wild boar, stuffed pigeon, partridge with chocolate, pigeon with nuts and roast venison are just a few of the possible dishes that Protos Reserva can be paired with. Be Solo DO
It is not always clear at first glance what exactly is behind a wine. This is also the case with Sei Solo. Javier Zaccagnini, former founder and owner of the famous Bodegas Aalto, founded his personal project in 2007. He bought around 3 hectares of vineyards near his favorite village of La Horra in the Ribera del Duero region. His aim was to bring the finesse and elegance of the Ribera del Duero into his wines, without the wines losing their backbone and tannin structure. Javier Zaccagnini is a lover of classical music and particularly admires Johann Sebastian Bach. He derived the name for his wines from the six sonatas for violin and obbligato harpsichord (Sei Sounate à Cembalo certato è Violino Solo).Sei Solo is a top-class Spanish red wine that is dark purple-red in the glass. The nose reveals particularly aromatic fruit notes of plum and blackberry. The wine smells of Mediterranean herbs, cocoa and subtle roasted aromas. A hint of licorice completes the whole. On the palate, Sei Solo is powerful and complex, with an exceptional freshness that you would not expect from such a wine. The balance between velvety tannins and rich fruit characterizes the mouthfeel.Elegant and full of finesse, Sei Solo pairs wonderfully with lasagne, mature cheese, lamb and braised dishes.

Protos Roble DO
The Protos Roble marks the beginning of the line of famous Protos red wines. Made from 100% Tinta del Pais—the name given to the Tempranillo variety in the Ribera del Duero region—this Joven (the term for a young wine from a Spanish winery) already reveals the creativity of the winery. The destemmed grapes were fermented for approximately 12 days after pressing. The temperature was constantly monitored during this process. The wine then aged for 6 months in American oak barrels, followed by an additional 6 months of bottle aging before being released to the market. The color of the Protos Roble is cherry red with violet hues. On the nose, the wine is beautifully fruity and intensely spicy without being overpowering. The discernible aromas of blueberry, sour cherry, and wild berries harmonize with light notes of vanilla, tobacco, and cocoa. On the palate, the wine presents a firm structure, powerful, juicy, and round. We recommend enjoying the Protos Roble slightly chilled at 15 degrees Celsius; this preserves the fruity notes and creates an elegant tasting experience with a long finish and soft tannins. The Protos Roble is not only impressive on its own; it also pairs very well with salami or cheese. It complements tomato-based dishes as well as pasta or stuffed eggplant.

Preludio de Sei Solo DO

Aalto
There are quite a few people who claim that Aalto wines represent the best of Spanish viticulture in the Ribera del Duero region. Every year, the Aalto wines are once again compared to those produced by the Vega Sicilia estate, and the Aalto wines often win by a nose. For more than 30 years, Mariano García Fernández, the founder of the Aalto winery, was responsible for the wines produced by the Vega Sicilia estate, of which he was the Technical Director. With his own Bodega Aalto, García Fernández wants to achieve the best result without losing respect for the grapes. In creating his wines, he strives for the maximum expression of the terroir, uniting structure and power with elegance and complexity. The Aalto was characterised by a warm winter’s end and an early spring with early flowering. Sufficient rain in summer and a dry autumn led to grapes of an optimal quality. The grapes come mainly from very old vines that are up to 80 years old.The pure varietal Tempranillo (in the Burgos and Valladolid region better known as Tinto Fino) is a cherry red in colour. The wine offers fine notes of spices on the nose, along with light flavours of well-integrated wood. On the palate, the Aalto is wonderfully fresh and dense. Notes of tobacco, coffee and subtle aromas of liquorice reveal the unique style so typical of this Aalto. Due to its soft and round character, the wine can already be enjoyed young. Owing to the soft, enclosing tannins and a good acidity, the Aalto will increase its complexity over the coming years. The ageing of the wine in half new and half used barrels ofAmerican and French oak ensures that it will store well in the bottle. Enjoy the Aalto with a lovely beef roast or simply on its own in front of the fireplace.

Protos Crianza DO
