Print product information sheet

The Toro region in northwestern Spain is renowned for intense and powerful wines. The Matsu El Viejo is additionally equipped with elegance and finesse, reflecting the flawless artistry of winemaking with the Tempranillo grape, which is known as Tinta de Toro in this region.

The Matsu El Viejo, which means ‘the old man’, is a selection of grapes from vineyards that are more than 100 years old. The vines in these low-yield vineyards are biodynamically cultivated. After the fermentation and the subsequent malolactic fermentation, the wine matured for 16 months in French oak casks. The wine was deliberately not filtered, thus preserving its full aroma structure. The Matsu El Viejo is a deep cherry-red in the glass with purple glints on the rim. It has a wonderfully intense bouquet of black fruit. Due to the ageing in casks, the Matsu El Viejo shows roast aromas and notes of smoke and spices that are wonderfully structured and integrated. On the palate, the wine is fleshy, ripe and round. The noticeable but fine tannins give the El Viejo a light sweetness. The finish is once again characterised by the harmony between fruit and wood aromas.

The Matsu El Viejo is a typical accompaniment to meals, and stands up well to  hearty sauces and intensely flavoured grilled dishes. We recommend trying this amazing wine with blue cheeses.

Roda DOC Reserva
An excellent vintage in the wine-growing region of Rioja and an outstanding Roda wine. This blend, consisting of  90% Tempranillo, a 5% of Graciano and a 6% of Garnacha, has a wonderful bouquet offering notes of sweet cherries, black fruit and nuances of Mediterranean herbs, complemented by perfectly integrated oak aromas. On the palate, the deep red Roda DOC Reserva is sumptuous and full-bodied. Initially, the wine is very fruity, showing an enormous balance and fine tannins. Its finish is once again characterised by a great, fresh fruitiness. The grapes come from bush vines that are more than 30 years old. These vines are cultivated without wire trellis training systems. The wine matured for 14 months in barriques, of which 40% were new and 60% were second-fill barrels. Afterwards, it was aged for another 30 months in the bottle. Luis Gutierrez writes in the Wine Advocate: ‘This wine has the potential to become a real bestseller.’You’ll want to discover the Toda DOC Reserva with moderate or hearty stews with chicken or beef, for example. The Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano grape varieties unite here to create the wonderful Muga Reserva Rioja. The Rioja is impressively full-bodied and aromatic on the palate, offering the fruitiness of berries, hints of menthol and an elegant acidity. The finish is long-lasting. The Muga Reserva Rioja matured for 24 months in oak casks (medium toast) and for at least another 12 months in the bottle. Wine critic Luis Gutiérrez is impressed by this wine and awards it 91 points in Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate: ‘It has the telltale aromas of spices and berry fruit, with the Muga signature and a medium-bodied palate with some dusty tannins that would welcome food.’ Try this Rioja with veal, cold cuts (pork) or rather hearty stews, for example.
