Sometimes it’s so easy to create a wine. One evening, Sue Sonnenberg, the wife of the owner of the Diemersfontein estate David Sonnenberg, asked her husband whether the painting in their dining room wouldn’t be a wonderful depiction for the label of the bottles of wine. It didn’t take long before the iconic presentation of Carl Büchner’s Harlequin was depicted on the label.

This wine commemorates this exemplary artist: in cooperation with the ‘Association of Arts’ in Pretoria, a part of the revenue from sales of this wine goes into a small fund supporting aspiring artists. The Diemersfontein Harlequin is made from the Shiraz and Pinotage grape varieties. The Shiraz was aged in third- and fourth-fill wooden casks, while the Pinotage matured for 12 months in French oak staves. Winemaker Francois Roode assembled several blends and finally chose the most expressive one. The Diemersfontein Harlequin is a dark red in colour and offers lovely berry and roast aromas in its bouquet. On the palate, the wine shows aromas of plums and currants, along with noticeable notes of mocha. It has a slightly sweet taste and a juicy tannin structure.

Diemersfontein Wine

Nur 45 Autominuten von Kapstadt entfernt liegt Diemersfontein in unmittelbarer Nähe der berühmten Weinstraße am Kap. Bekannt ist Diemersfontein vor allem für seinen herausragenden Pinotage.

Seit den frühen 1940er Jahren ist Diemersfontein im Besitz der Familie Sonnenberg. Max Sonnenberg kaufte die 183 Hektar große Farm, die im Schatten der majestätischen Hawekwa Mountains liegt und mit einem Panoramablick auf die beiden Berge Du Toit Kloof und Bains Kloof ihre Besucher begeistert. Im Mittelpunkt des Weingutes liegen malerische Gärten, die von Cecilia Sonnenberg entworfen wurden. Unzählige Rosen und Azaleen bieten mit ihrer Blütenpracht den Rahmen für festliche Anlässe.

Die ersten Weinberge wurden in den 1970er-Jahren gepflanzt und im Jahr 2000 baute David Sonennberg seinen eigenen Keller und begann mit der Produktion preisgekrönter Gutsweine. Die Rebflächen sind mit Shiraz, Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot ausgelegt, aber auch die „weniger bekannten“ Rebsorten Viognier, Barbera, Roobernet und Mouvedre werden hier erfolgreich angebaut. Bekannt wurde Diemersfontein vor allem für seinen herausragenden Pinotage.

Spier Signature Pinotage

By planting the pinotage grapes in rows in a north-easterly direction the grapes are not in the bright afternoon sun. This prevents them to develop a roasted and spicy aroma. And it helps even more that the sea is near, only 8 kilometer away. By low proceeds of 50 hectoliters per hectare the grapes get lots of intensity and the wine has enough strength and depth to let a part of it mature in wooden barrels. Fermentation at no more than 25 ° C ensures plenty of fruit. 40% of the wine matured in French oak barrels or American origin, making this a pleasant vanilla tasty Pinotage without sacrificing the fruit.
