Friendships such as the one between wine-makers Thomas Hensel and Markus Schneider count for a lot. Both come from the Palatinate and both of them create their own outstanding wines, so it was only logical that Hensel and Schneider decided to collaborate on a joint project.

They created the Hensel and Gretel Weißwein (white wine), amongst others. This cuvée consists of Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris. It is a fine, shimmering gold in the glass. On the nose, the wine surprises connoisseurs with an abundance of fruit aromas such as notes of apples, pears and tropical fruit like melon, peaches and passion fruit.

On the palate, the Hensel and Gretel Weisswein is marvellously powerful and expressive. It is a multi-faceted, complex wine that is a genuine delight right from the first sip. The wine was aged in second-fill wooden casks, leading to light notes of smoke and oak. The finish is slightly sweet.

The Hensel and Gretel Weißwein is not only a lovely terrace wine but is also a wonderful accompaniment to light dishes.

Thomas Hensel is one of 20 wineries in Bad Dürkheim. His 17-hectare vineyard is located next to the local "airport" (airfield). The Hensel und Gretel Cuvée Rotwein (red wine) is another joint project realised by the wine-makers Thomas Hensel and Markus Schneider. The wine-makers from the Palatinate share not only a deep friendship, but their passion for creating great wines as well. Thus it’s no surprise that they collaborated in the creation of the Hensel and Gretel Rotwein (red wine), amongst others. Both of them are particularly fond of the Cabernet Sauvignon grape variety, which predominates in this red wine. The wine is a powerful deep red in the glass. On the nose, it is redolent of cocoa, vanilla, blackberries, cassis and dark cherries. The Hensel and Gretel Rotwein (red wine) is elegant and round on the palate, with wonderfully integrated tannins. The dry, boldly spicy wine has a fruity finish.The versatile Hensel and Gretel Rotwein (red wine) is an ideal accompaniment to pizza, pasta and similar dishes. It is also lovely to enjoy on its own – ideal for a cosy evening at home.

Hensel Ikarus Rotwein

Great wines need great names. Thus, the name taken from Greek mythology is a good choice for the Hensel Icarus. The wine is made from the Cabernet Cubin grape variety. It is vinified only in vintages that produce extraordinary grapes. The grapes for this wine come from a new line created in 1970 by crossing the Blaufränkisch and Cabernet Sauvignon grape varieties. The Hensel estate has long experimented with this grape variety, so that some of the vines are more than 40 years old. Although this leads to low yields, the grapes are extremely powerful.The Hensel Ikarus is a shimmering deep purple in the glass and offers rich berry flavours. We recommend decanting the wine before drinking it as the wine needs some time to open up. After a breathing period, the wine offers aromas of ripe berries on the palate, along with intense notes of coffee and delicious nuances of tobacco.The athletic tannins reveal the Hensel Ikarus’ great potential.
