The Bodegas Salentein in Mendoza, Argentina, is one of the most renowned wineries in South America. Outstanding vineyards situated at the foot of the Andes, a winemaker who was a professor of oenology and is today considered the expert on Argentinian viticulture, and cellars that are the envy of a number of French Grand Cru producers are only a few of the aces up the Salentein estate’s sleeve.

What does an exceptional wine producer like Bodegas Salentein need to play its trump cards? Right - an iconic wine, a flagship to present the wine-making expertise at the highest level. The Gran VU is this premium, iconic blend produced by the Salentein estate. It consists of about 75% Malbec and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and remains for 24 months in French oak casks in order to age in peace.

The Salentein Gran VU is a brilliant, intense dark red with violet glints in the glass. It is concentrated on the nose, offering complex aromas of black berries, liquorice and light notes of mint as well as spices and hints of graphite. On the palate, the wine shows an elegant structure, an incredibly full body and soft, velvety tannins that are already marvellously integrated. The finish is never-ending, leaving a lasting impression of a fantastic wine.

We recommend decanting the Salentein Gran VU one hour before drinking it. Its ideal drinking temperature is about 16 °C (60.8 °F). The Gran VU can already be enjoyed now but will maintain its quality perfectly for several years to come.

Salentein zählt zu den Ausnahme-Weingüter in der neuen Welt. Dabei ist die Winery nur ein Ausschnitt aus dem großen Portfolio dieses Unternehmens, dass seit 1992 in Argentinien tätig ist und den Weinbau seit 1995 betreibt. In Uruguay unter dem Namen Gran Pedro seit 2003 und in Australien als GP Cattle seit 2006 bekannt, ist neben Wein auch Farming, Premium Beef und Hotelerie auf dem Programm, so, als wolle man im Bereich der Gaumenfreuden alles selbst in die Hand nehmen und nichts dem Zufall überlassen.

Die Winery ist dabei ein sehr wichtig Bestandteil von Salentein und wurde bereits im Jahre 2003 als "Argentinian Winery of the Year" ausgezeichnet. Chef-Winemaker ist seit 2010 José Galante, der als einer der besten und erfolgreichsten Önologen Argentiniens gilt. Mit über 30 Jahren Berufserfahrung und einer 10 jährigen Tätigkeit als Dozent am Lehrstuhl für Önologie an der Universität Maza, ist er immer noch beratend in aller Welt unterwegs.

Das Weingut selbst ist gelegen im Valle de Uco am Fuße der Anden und die Reben sind bis auf eine Höhe von 1500 Metern gepflanzt. Es handelt sich um beste Lagen, teils mit einer Geschichte, die bis in das 17. Jahrhundert zurückreicht.

Angepflanzt werden sowohl autochtone Rebsorten, als auch die klassischen Vertreter wie Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir oder Cabernet Sauvignon. Die tagsüber vorhandene Hitze wird balanciert durch kühle Nächte, wodurch die Reifezeit der Trauben verlängert wird und herrlich geschmacks- und fruchtintensive Weine erzielt werden. Das trockene Klima erfordert ein System der künstliche Bewässerung, welches das Schmelzwasser der Anden in die Rebgärten transportiert.

Man scheut bei den Bodegas Salentein keine Mühe, um hochwertige Weine zu keltern, die einen Ruf weit über Argentinien hinaus genießen. Die Bodega selbst ist ein imposanter Bau, mit einem riesigen unterirdischen Keller, der bereits mehrere Architekturpreise gewonnen hat.

Since its foundation in 1995, Bodegas Salentein has spared no effort to become one of the premium wineries in Argentina. They succeeded in hiring the star oenologist José Galante; millions were invested in the construction of the wine cellar, which was built underground in the shape of a cross using state-of-the-art technology. The Barrel Selection Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the outstanding results of this remarkable effort.This red wine from the Bodega Salentein winery is a pure Cabernet Sauvignon that was allowed to mature for 12 months in French oak barrels before being bottled. Its intensely dark, almost red-black color is striking in the glass. It has a classic Cabernet Sauvignon aroma, with blackcurrant, pepper and vanilla. Lots of flesh on the palate, with a very elegant structure and well-integrated, soft and fine tannins. The finish is long and full-bodied. Lovers of typical Cabernet Sauvignons will be delighted with the Argentinian Salentein Barrel Selection.This dry red wine is best served at 16-18 degrees and is an excellent accompaniment to grilled meat, lamb, game and mildly spiced red meat, as well as hard cheeses. A little decanting allows the aromas to come into their own.

The ‘Barrel Selection’ line from the Salentein winery comprises pure varietal wines whose vines grow in vineyards situated between 1050 and 1700 metres above sea level, irrigated by the clean meltwater from the Andes mountains. The stony soils protect the vines from excessively cool temperatures at night. During the day, the hot climate and lots of sunshine form the ideal basis to create wines that wonderfully reflect the characteristics of the terroir of the Uco Valley. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay vines as well as the pure varietal Malbec are cultivated here.The Salentein Barrel Selection Malbec is an intense, slightly purplish red in colour. It is complex on the nose, offering an abundance of red fruit and black berries as well as light floral notes. Each sip softly caresses the palate with lots of fruit and a delicate sweetness. The finish is long and very smooth. This Malbec is fresh and fruity, with a lovely intensity.We recommend drinking it at a temperature of 16 °C (60.8 °F). The Bodegas Salentein estate, located in the Uco Valley near Mendoza in Argentina, is one of the most renowned wineries in South America. Both the building itself with its underground cellar in the shape of a cross and the range of wines offered by the winery are impressive. The Salentein Barrel Selection Chardonnay is a pure varietal Chardonnay that matured for 6 months in American oak casks before it was bottled. It is a straw yellow in the glass. The wonderfully rich bouquet offers aromas of pears, apples, cloves, lime blossoms and tropical fruit such as honeydew melon and limes. On the palate, the wine is soft and ingratiatingly full-bodied, with a lovely melt. The subtle hints of tropical fruit are underpinned by discreet notes of oak. The opulent Chardonnay is well-balanced, showing a lovely acidity.Its long finish is soft, elegant and silky. We recommend enjoying the Salentein Barrel Selection Chardonnay on its own as an aperitif but also to accompany a good meal. The Kaiken Estate Malbec comes from the Agrelo vineyards in Luján de Cuyo, around 40 km south of Mendoza. The region's warm daytime climate and cool nights produce grapes with good freshness and aromatic fruit. The deep clay soils support a balanced red wine with soft tannins and a pleasant structure.The grapes are harvested by hand and fermented in concrete tanks after destemming. Part of the wine matures for a few months in French oak barrels, while the larger part is matured without wood contact. This keeps the wine juicy and fruity, with a subtle spiciness and soft tannins.In the glass, the Kaiken Malbec is a deep ruby red. The nose is dominated by aromas of plums and cherries, supported by light floral notes. Die Weinberge des argentinischen Weinguts Bodega Catena Zapata erstrecken sich in Lagen bis zu 1500 Metern hoch. Die Trauben für den Catena Malbec stammen aus verschiedenen Lagen und ausgewählten Parzellen der Mendoza-Berge. Sie werden von Hand verlesen und separat verarbeitet. Der Rotwein wird für rund 12-14 Monate in französischen und amerikanischen Eichenholzfässern ausgebaut.Das Bukett ist reich an Frucht und Würze. Hier treffen Kirschen und Brombeeren auf Kaffeearomen, Tabaknoten und pfeffrige Akzente. Am Gaumen zeigt der elegante Wein eine saftige Fruchtfülle mit seidiger Textur und feinkörnigen Tanninen. Der tief violett-rote Wein ist ein toller Begleiter zu rotem Fleisch, kräftigem Käse sowie Gerichten, bei denen Saucen mit Zwiebeln oder mit schwarzem Pfeffer gereicht werden.Den Salentein Primus Malbec können Sie problemlos für 10 Jahre lagern.

Der Clos Saint Jean Chateauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous 2020, hergestellt aus Trauben der Hügellage "La Crau" vom Châteauneuf-du-Pape Weingut Clos Saint Jean, wird oftmals als Kultwein oder Ikone beworben. Wir halten ihn schlichtweg für einen der herausragenden Châteauneuf-du-Pape Weine überhaupt, vinifiziert von der inzwischen fünften Generation der Maurels, den Besitzern von Clos Saint Jean. Ihr Vorfahre, Edmont Tacussel, hatte diese Lage zwischen 1905 und 1910 bepflanzt, und diese Reben stehen dort immer noch. Da der Weinberg so durchsetzt war mit riesigen Kieseln und es mit dem Pferd eigentlich aussichtslos war, hier Weinbergsarbeit zu betreiben, wurde die Lage "La Combe des Fous" genannt, der Hügel der Verrückten. Letztlich stellte sich dieser Rebberg als eine, wenn nicht die beste Lage der ganzen Gegend heraus, und die Weine, die von hier stammen, sind Châteauneuf-du-Pape der Spitzenklasse.Höchst geringer Ertrag, Handlese und über 100 Jahre alte Reben machen hier den Stoff aus, aus dem Träume sind. Die Assemblage besteht aus 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah 10% Cinsault und weiteren 10% Vaccarese. Der Grenache wird übrigens im 600 Liter-Holzfass ausgebaut, die anderen Rebsorten geniessen eine Nachreifung für 12 Monate in neuen Eichenfässern.In der Nase ein äußerst pikanter Charme mit Anklängen von Waldbeeren, viel Schwarzkirsche, Pflaume, Lavendel, Wildkräuter, Schlehe, Tabak, schwarze Oliven und Tee. Der Gaumen ist fein aufgelöst, sehr ausdrucksvoll, würzig und elegant und zu den zuvor erwähnten Aromen gesellen sich Pralinen, Salz und Grapefruit. Das alles steht in perfekter Harmonie zueinander, schön ausgewogen und balanciert, nichts, was hier zu dominant oder gar erschlagend wirken könnte. Das Terroir ist einfach so genial und magisch, dass hier alles seinen Platz findet. Der Nachhall ist überwältigend lang.
