Auch der Morgenster Merlot ist dafür ein gutes Beispiel. Ein schönes dichtes Rot im Glas und üppige Frucht in der Nase. Am Gaumen sehr breit angelegt mit samtig weichen Tanninen. Gerade das Tannin ist es, was dem Wein seine Fülle und Gewicht verleiht. Satt und vielschichtig im Abgang.

This South African Cabernet Sauvignon is a wonderful entry to the world of wines from Diemersfontein. The Sonnenberg family winery is known primarily for its Pinotage creations, but also showcases its remarkable expertise in winemaking with this Cabernet Sauvignon. This red wine from the Wellington region offers aromas of black currants, sweet plums and cloves, complemented by wonderfully harmonious notes of dried herbs and vanillas as well as nuances of nuts and tar. On the palate, this South African red is elegant and magnificently aromatic, with fragrances of cherries and blueberries predominating. The Diemersfontein Cabernet Sauvignon has an excellent structure with noticeable tannins.It was aged for twelve months in second-fill oak barrels. The Cabernet from Diemersfontein is ready to drink now, but will continue its development in the coming years. With its aromas of ripe fruit, the presence of the structured tannins and lovely herbal notes, this South African red wine is an ideal accompaniment to hearty dishes. Die alkoholische Gärung dieses zu 80% aus Merlot und zu 20% aus Cabernet Sauvignon bestehenden Rebsaftes dauert zwischen 8 bis 10 Tagen, mit zweimaligem Umpumpen am Tag. Dies unterstützt die optimale Extraktion der Aromen. Es folgt eine lange Mazeration von 25 bis 30 Tagen. Die malolaktische Gärung erfolgt in Tanks. Dort reift er weiter für etwa 18 Monate, bis er schließlich abgefüllt wird.Der Château La Maroutine 2018 überzeugt durch eine rubinrote Farbe. Die Nase zeigt charmante Kirschnoten und Kaffee- sowie Röstaromen. Am Gaumen vermittelt dieser Bordeaux eher einen weichen, vollen und runden Stil, wobei die Tannine zwar präsent, aber geschliffen und samtig sind. Der Merlot wirkt hier gut gereift und verführt mit schöner, dichter Frucht.Ein klassischer Bordeaux, der jetzt bis 2025 auf der Höhe der Trinkreife sein dürfte.Ein Genuß in geselliger Runde, aber auch sehr gut im food-pairing mit Gulasch, Braten oder zur Käseplatte.

In line with tradition, Morgenster also produces a second Bordeaux-style wine in South Africa. The Morgenster Lourens River Valley is a blend consisting of the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot grape varieties, produced with the advisory assistance of Pierre Lurton from Chateau Cheval Blanc in Bordeaux. The philosophy aims at creating an accessible wine that particularly reflects the fruit aromas so typical of the terroir, and simultaneously ensuring longevity. The wine is a bright, opaque ruby-red in the glass. On the nose, it offers lovely cherry aromas, complemented by notes of strawberry tarts and cassis. After the Morgenster Lourens River Valley has breathed for a while, it shows aromas of liquorice, vanilla and spices, accompanied by fruity nuances of plums, mulberries and raspberries. The wine is silky and smooth on the palate, offering a delicious fruity sweetness. The elegant tannins develop a lovely balance between ripe berry aromas and a great freshness. Henry Kotze, cellar master at Morgenster, speaks of a worthwhile wine that gains in complexity after it is decanted.The Morgenster Lourens River Valley goes beautifully with roast duck, poultry and ostrich. It is also a perfect accompaniment to risotto with wild mushrooms or roast lamb.

This Barrel Selection wine from the Bodegas Salentein estate, located in the Uco Valley at the foot of the Andes in Argentina, is a pure varietal Merlot. Winemaker José Galante, a former professor of oenology at the University of Maza, is one of Argentina’s most renowned and successful oenologists. With this wine, he created a wonderfully fruity, full-bodied Merlot distinguished by its intensity as well as its subtle nuances. This is due particularly to the hot temperatures prevailing in the Uco Valley during the day, accompanied by cool nights, ensuring optimal ripening of the grapes. The Barrel Selection Merlot is a deep red with blue glints in the glass. On the nose, it offers lots of fruit and is redolent of ripe quinces, wild berries and spices, along with nuances of tobacco and vanilla that result from the ageing in French oak casks. On the palate, the wine is extremely full-bodied and soft, showing a superb structure with ripe, very fine tannins and a long, charming finish. This Barrel Selection Merlot not only shows an immense, fruity fullness but is also rich in substance and concentration, giving it much more character than its competitors. This wine is always the right choice for those who prefer typical and thus not merely fruity Merlot wines. In this respect, the Salentein Barrel Selection Merlot is exactly what Bodegas Salentein wants to achieve: to produce a wine that wonderfully reflects the marvellous terroir of its vineyards located in Mendoza. This Merlot is lovely to enjoy on its own. It also goes beautifully with ripe hard cheeses, dishes with beef and other red meat, and anything grilled. We recommend serving it at a temperature of 16 °C (60.8 °F) and decanting the wine half an hour before drinking it.
