Waterford The Jem

Waterford The Jem is the flagship wine of the renowned South African Waterford Estate. This exceptional red wine cuvée combines the estate's best grapes and reflects the unique terroir of Stellenbosch. Named after the founder Jeremy Ord ("Jem"), this wine stands for craftsmanship, complexity and elegance at the highest level.

Up to eight different grape varieties are combined for The Jem, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Each grape variety is vinified separately in order to bring out its individual character traits in the best possible way. After temperature-controlled fermentation, the wine is matured for at least 20 months in French oak barrels, followed by further bottle ageing to perfectly integrate the aromas and refine the tannins.

In the glass, Waterford The Jem is a deep ruby red with garnet reflections. The nose is characterized by a complex bouquet of dark berries, cassis and ripe plums, complemented by fine notes of fynbos, vanilla oak, crushed violets and cloves. On the palate, velvety tannins provide fullness, while the natural acidity ensures liveliness and elegance. The wine finishes on a lingering mineral note, presenting a classic dry profile and generous texture.

Waterford The Jem harmonizes perfectly with strong meat dishes such as fillet of beef, rack of lamb or wild boar ragout. Matured hard cheese or dishes with truffles also underline its profound aroma.

Waterford Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
An outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon from South Africa: the Waterford Estate winery was founded in 1998 and has quickly gained an international reputation with its red and white wines from the Blaauwklippen Valley in the Stellenbosch region. Creations such as the Waterford Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 will further cement this reputation. The Waterford Estate Cabernet Sauvignon has a seductive aroma of cassis, cedar wood, mocha and new oak.On the palate, Waterford Cabernet Sauvignon is dry, complex and impressively elegant. With a medium to full body, supple tannins and energetic acidity. "The wine closes with classic Cabernet expressions of blackberry skin, vanilla and a hint of sage on the long, lingering finish," writes Mueller. Perfect balance. the Cabernet Sauvignon from the Blaauwklippen Valley matured for 18 months in French oak barrels. Around a third of the barrels were new. With its earthy tones, this spicy red wine is an ideal accompaniment to high-quality dark meat, for example beef baked in a salt crust.
