Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate awards 94 points and high praise to the Bibi Graetz Testamatta Rosso Toscana 2019 as “a pure expression of Sangiovese” in its accolade to this fantastic Tuscan red wine, which is also celebrated by other wine critics around the globe. James Suckling awards it 97 points, followed by Falstaff with 95.

Connoisseurs can look forward to a fascinatingly complex and intense bouquet. Suckling writes of a “very attractive combination of dried fruit and spices with black cherries and plums. Aromas of flowers and sandalwood, too.” The Wine Advocate detects “perfumed blue flower, candied orange peel, wet earth and plummy black fruit.”

On the palate, the Bibi Graetz Testamatta Rosso Toscana 2019 is full-bodied, simultaneously powerful and elegant. The velvety tannins are wonderfully integrated and intertwined with the intense fruit, resulting in an exceptional taste experience. Moreover, according to the Wine Advocate, “a strong chalky mineral signature” characterises the looong finish.

Bibi Graetz himself wrote, “Elegance, that is the word that describes Testamatta 2019,” adding that “Testamatta 2019 is perfectly balanced with deep layers that show incredible complexity."

The grapes for the single-varietal Sangiovese come from the five best vineyards of the Testamatta estate in Tuscany: Vincigliata, Londa, Lamole, Montefili and Siena. The vines are up to 80 years old. The staff involved in producing the Bibi Graetz Testamatta undertake up to eight (!) harvesting phases. Only grapes of optimal ripeness are used in this shimmering, deep ruby red wine. The wines from the individual vineyards were aged in oak casks for 20 months.

Graetz wrote, “The 20th anniversary of Testamatta is a real milestone, the pinnacle of quality that I have been looking for in my Sangiovese since the first vintage in 2000.” Those who open a bottle of the Testamatta 2019 are fortunate to be able to share in it.

Diesen „Super-Toskaner“ braucht man eigentlich nicht mehr vorstellen. Italienische Eleganz, gepaart mit viel Finesse und feinster, vielschichtiger Aromatik bei balancierter Säure stehen auch beim 2021er Tignanello im Vordergrund, der 2021 fünfzig Jahre alt geworden ist. Nie auf der feisten und fetten Seite, nie erschlagend, und doch von majestätischer Figur, immer ausgewogen und höchst vielschichtig. Die Cuvée besteht aus 80 % Sangiovese, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon und 5% Cabernet Franc. An der Nase viel dunkle Früchte, Zeder, Kräuter, Orange, Gewürze, süsser Pfeiffentabak und Pfeffer. Dies setzt sich am Gaumen fort, mit zusätzlichen Noten von Grapefruit, Himbeere, einem Korb voll dunkler und heller Kirschen, etwas Nelken und viel cremigen, sanften Tanninen. Im Hintergrund spinnt eine feine Säure ihre Fäden und hält die Komposition zusammen. Der Nachhall ist extrem lang und nicht enden wollend. Der 2021er Tignanello bleibt dabei immer eine vollendet harmonische Hymne, ohne jegliche dissonante Noten. Wieviel Hingabe und Perfektion diesem Wein zu Teil kommt, wird auch dadurch deutlich, dass er 17 Monate im Fass reift. Davon verbringt er 3 Monate während der malolaktischen Gärung in neutralem Holz und liegt anschließend noch 14 Monate zu 50% in Neufässern. Es ist kein Wunder, dass auch in diesem Jahr das Flagschiff der Marchesi Antinori nahezu einhellig den Highscore der Kritiker abräumt (zu den Bewertungen siehe unten). Wer den Wein bereits heute gerne trinken möchte, sollte ihn mindestens für zwei Stunden vor dem Genuss dekantieren. Ansonsten dürfte er, die Geduld des Besitzers vorausgesetzt, noch mehrere Dekaden Trinkfreude bereiten. Parker: 98/100; Galloni 98/100.

The Bibi Graetz Testamatta Rosso 2020 is an outstanding red wine from Tuscany. You don't really need to say much more when you hear the name Bibi Graetz in the wine world. You can simply rely on getting a super Tuscan that makes international wine critics rave about it. It's no different with this single-varietal Sangiovese from the 2020 vintage. Nevertheless, let's take a closer look - so that the anticipation grows.Incidentally, Testamatta means something like "muddlehead". There seems to be a lot of irony in this name, because you can hardly create a wine in a more planned and meticulous way than the team around Bibi Graetz in the small town of Fiesole (in the north-east of Florence) does.Graetz himself shows no false modesty with his Testamatta Rosso 2020: "This is the highest level of perfection ever achieved," he writes. He particularly emphasizes the strawberry notes and vanilla aroma, as well as an incredible freshness.James Suckling awarded the wine 94 points and described the bouquet as follows: "Beautiful, fresh aromas of sour cherries, orange peel and lemon shrub." Notes of plum and freshly cut liquorice also enrich the complex bouquet.On the palate, the Bibi Graetz Testamatta Rosso 2020 is dry, highly aromatic and wonderfully fresh. Graetz attributes the freshness to the new vineyards in Olmo, where the grapes ripen on a "magical terroir" at an altitude of 420 meters.
