The Clos Saint Jean Deus ex machina 2022 is an iconic wine from the renowned Clos Saint Jean winery in the prestigious Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. The term "Deus ex machina", which means "God from the machine", symbolizes a turn for the better, the solution to a problem or simply the change in a situation due to something unforeseen. In this case, it was the arrival of oenologist Phillipe Cambie in 2003, who radically transformed the style of Clos Saint Jean into an even higher quality, more individual character and knew how to get the best out of the already brilliant terroir.

The Deus ex machina comes from the La Crau vineyard in the north of the château, which is planted with Grenache vines over 100 years old. Accordingly, the cuvée consists of 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvedre. The wine is matured in stainless steel barrels and then aged in new oak.

The Clos Saint Jean Châteauneuf-du-Pape Deus ex machina 2022 pleases the eye with a dark violet color. The nose smells of black cherries, truffles, new leather, violets and lots of herbs, smoke, with traces of cedar and some vanilla due to the use of new wood during the post-maturing process. The palate is highly intense, concentrated, yet very creamy and velvety, in an overall very opulent, yet fresh style. This is mirrored by the extremely long finish.

A racy Châteauneuf-du-Pape with high expectations, which it more than fulfills. It will be ready to drink from around 2024-2028, with a very long life perspective.

Der Clos Saint Jean Chateauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous 2020, hergestellt aus Trauben der Hügellage "La Crau" vom Châteauneuf-du-Pape Weingut Clos Saint Jean, wird oftmals als Kultwein oder Ikone beworben. Wir halten ihn schlichtweg für einen der herausragenden Châteauneuf-du-Pape Weine überhaupt, vinifiziert von der inzwischen fünften Generation der Maurels, den Besitzern von Clos Saint Jean. Ihr Vorfahre, Edmont Tacussel, hatte diese Lage zwischen 1905 und 1910 bepflanzt, und diese Reben stehen dort immer noch. Da der Weinberg so durchsetzt war mit riesigen Kieseln und es mit dem Pferd eigentlich aussichtslos war, hier Weinbergsarbeit zu betreiben, wurde die Lage "La Combe des Fous" genannt, der Hügel der Verrückten. Letztlich stellte sich dieser Rebberg als eine, wenn nicht die beste Lage der ganzen Gegend heraus, und die Weine, die von hier stammen, sind Châteauneuf-du-Pape der Spitzenklasse.Höchst geringer Ertrag, Handlese und über 100 Jahre alte Reben machen hier den Stoff aus, aus dem Träume sind. Die Assemblage besteht aus 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah 10% Cinsault und weiteren 10% Vaccarese. Der Grenache wird übrigens im 600 Liter-Holzfass ausgebaut, die anderen Rebsorten geniessen eine Nachreifung für 12 Monate in neuen Eichenfässern.In der Nase ein äußerst pikanter Charme mit Anklängen von Waldbeeren, viel Schwarzkirsche, Pflaume, Lavendel, Wildkräuter, Schlehe, Tabak, schwarze Oliven und Tee. Der Gaumen ist fein aufgelöst, sehr ausdrucksvoll, würzig und elegant und zu den zuvor erwähnten Aromen gesellen sich Pralinen, Salz und Grapefruit. Das alles steht in perfekter Harmonie zueinander, schön ausgewogen und balanciert, nichts, was hier zu dominant oder gar erschlagend wirken könnte. Das Terroir ist einfach so genial und magisch, dass hier alles seinen Platz findet. Der Nachhall ist überwältigend lang.

Vincent and Pascal Maurel, now the fifth generation of the Maurel family, are unwaveringly continuing the tradition of the renowned château. Their ancestor, Edmont Tacussel, planted this site between 1905 and 1910, and the vines are still there today. As the vineyard was so riddled with huge pebbles and it was actually hopeless to work the vines here on horseback, the site was named "La Combe des Fous", the hill of the madmen. In the end, this vineyard turned out to be one of, if not the best vineyard in the entire region, and the wines that come from here are top-class Châteauneuf-du-Pape.Very low yields, hand-picking and vines over 100 years old are the stuff dreams are made of. The blend consists of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Cinsault and a further 10% Vaccarese. The Grenache is aged for 9 months in concrete tanks, while the other grape varieties are matured for 9 months in exclusively new oak barrels.Lots of fruit on the nose; very black berry, spicy, cassis, lots of black cherry, herbs, some forest floor, tea, tobacco and mocha. The palate is fresh, harmonious and well-balanced. Tannins and acidity are elegantly and delicately balanced with the impressive fruit aromas. The finish is wonderfully long and makes the 2021 La Combe des Fous a lasting experience.

In Flaschen abgefüllt wird tatsächlich nach dem Mondkalender!Dieser Châteauneuf-du-Pape bietet eine beeindruckende Aromenvielfalt, darunter dunkle Früchte wie schwarze Kirschen, Erdbeer- und Himbeer-Touch, Gewürze wie schwarzer Pfeffer, etwas Salz, Kräuter und Schokolade. Der Gaumen offenbar viel Charme, Seidigkeit und Harmonie, mit einem außerordentlich langen Nachhall. Ein insgesamt sehr feinsinniger Wein, mit einem faszinierenden Spiel der Aromen, der immer wieder neue Nuancen entdecken lässt."Smooth on the outside and dense on the inside, like a billiard ball" schreiben die Maurels auf der Homepage über ihre Weine. Wir haben zwar noch keine Billiard-Bälle degustiert, sind aber von der Qualität dieses Weines mehr als überzeugt.

This classic Côtes du Rhône of the exceptional 2017 vintage is produced by one of the oldest wineries of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation (AOC) that was founded in 1936. The Château La Nerthe estate had its origins in the 14th century and owns one of the region’s largest vineyards, covering an area of more than 222 acres.Tradition and attention to detail are of central importance. The grapes are harvested by hand and subsequently sorted on the table. The fermentation is carried out in tubs for a period of 18 to 21 days with regular pumping over and pressing down of the pomace as well as daily tasting of the must in order to reach the optimal extraction level. For malolactic fermentation, the Château La Nerthe Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2017 was put in oak casks and subsequently aged in barrels for 12 months, giving the wine its deep red colour. On the nose, it offers fragrances of black currants, black tea and dried flowers. The wine is full-bodied, fruity and very rich on the palate, showing a great body. All in all, the Château La Nerthe Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2017 has a very pure and intense character.We recommend enjoying this wonderful Châteauneuf-du-Pape with lamb, beef or duck.

The Dornier Pinotage comes from the famous Swartland, a wine region about 50 kilometers north of Dornier, which is known for its unique terroirs and strong wines. The vines grow on natural bush vineyards in a soil mix of sand and coffee stone. These dry conditions without irrigation result in small grapes with intensely concentrated aromas and make for particularly characterful wines.This Pinotage is a deep garnet red in the glass. Intense, persistent aromas of cherries and red berries unfold on the nose, finely complemented by notes of Turkish honey and rose water. On the palate, the red wine impresses with powerful concentration and an exciting combination of aromas of plum, bitter cherry, strawberry jam and black pepper. The taste experience is rounded off by subtle, spicy wood notes from the ageing in French oak.The grapes are harvested by hand for vinification. Some of the grapes are not destemmed in order to obtain additional structure. Fermentation takes place in open stainless steel tanks with pumping over four times a day to extract the fruit and tannins optimally. The Pinotage is pressed before complete drying and fermentation is completed in barrel. Malolactic fermentation also takes place in the barrel. The wine then matures for 18 months in French oak barrels, 10% of which are new wood, which further increases the complexity and depth of the wine.Dornier Pinotage is an excellent accompaniment to roasts and game dishes. Spicy dishes such as curries and the South African national dish bobotie also harmonize perfectly with this wine.
