Château Haut Batailley, geadelt als Cinquième Cru im Rahmen der Klassifikation von 1855, ist eines der ambitioniertesten Güter in Pauillac und der Flagschiff-Wein der alteingessenen Bordelaiser Familien Castéja und Borie-Manoux.
Der Jahrgang kann als ganz klassischer Standard für das linker Ufer angesehen werden. Die Assemblage besteht aus 78% Cabernet Sauvignon und 22% Merlot. Doch lassen wir René Gabriel für die Beschreibung dieses Rebsaftes zu Worte kommen, der das Ganze sehr treffend charakterisiert:
"Tiefes Purpur, satt in der Mitte, Granatschimmer am Rand. Grossartiges, tiefes, warmes Cabernetbouquet, viel dunkle Edelhölzer und Pflaumen. Selten kam ein Haut-Batailley bei der Primeurdegustation so finessenreich daher. Konzentrierter Gaumen, festes Extrakt, sehr guter Rückhalt und eine schon fast ungestüme Cabernetkraft ausstrahlend, fein körniges Finale, welches seine leicht bourgeoise Textur unterstreicht. Dieser Wein wird noch für viele, positive Überraschungen sorgen, nicht zuletzt wegen seinem grossartigen Alterungspotential. Ich persönlich stelle ihn über 2010er. Also ist dies ein ganz grosser Pauillac-Value heuer!"

Benjamin de Beauregard Pomerol

Die Familien Moulin und Cathiard haben 2014 Beauregard übernommen und die Qualität nochmals auf ein höheres Niveau gehoben. Dem Benjamin de Beauregard kommt dabei bei der Weinbereitung die selbe Sorgfalt zu, wie dem Grand Vin. Die Ernte wird auf Beauregard vollständig manuell ausgeführt. Der Benjamin wird im Holzfass ausgebaut, mit 30% Neufassanteil. Er ist von rubinroter Farbe. Die Nase umschmeicheln milde Düfte von dunklen Kirschen, Paprika, Karamell, Pflaumen und Kräutern. Am Gaumen überwiegen vor allem die Früchte und die feine Struktur imponiert. Der Abgang ist ebenfalls durch dunkle Früchte charakterisiert. Der Wein zeigt eine schöne Balance und Ausgeglichenheit. Er ist jetzt bereits nach etwas dekantieren trinkreif, bleibt aber durchaus noch 8 Jahren auf dem Höhepunkt. Köstlich in Kombination mit rotem Fleisch, Wildgerichten und Käse.

The Grand Vin from Château Batailley is one of the great classics from Pauillac in Bordeaux and impressively embodies the nobility and longevity of this traditional appellation. Year after year, the estate, which is one of the oldest in Pauillac, produces a red wine that masterfully combines finesse, structure and authenticity.Clearly dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with 74%, 23% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot, 60% of the 2018 Batailley was matured in new wooden barrels.It is an extremely elegant wine, with aromas of cassis, tobacco, graphite, dark berries, black chocolate and mint. Lots of structure on the palate, powerful bouquet, creamy, lots of fine tannins. The finish is long and fresh.Ready to drink from 2026, this wine should be given some time to fully blossom. It will then be able to delight connoisseurs with its multifaceted and deep aromas for almost 20 years.

This classic Côtes du Rhône comes from one of the oldest vineyards in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation (AOC), which was founded in 1936. Château La Nerthe dates back to the 14th century and, with over 90 hectares, has one of the largest vineyards in the region.Tradition and great attention to detail are very important here. The grapes are harvested by hand and then sorted on the table. The 2020 vintage of Alión from the legendary Bodegas Vega Sicilia is once again a phenomenal feast for the senses. The Spanish cult red wine has once again received top marks from international wine critics (e.g. 94 points in the Wine Advocate, 95 points from James Suckling). And what can we say: anyone lucky enough to open a bottle of Vega Sicilia Alión will quickly join in the praise.The bouquet of the pure Tempranillo (or Tinto Fino, as the grape variety is usually called in the Ribera del Duero region) is irresistibly captivating. Complex, intense notes of blackberries, blueberries, cherries and pomegranate in a wonderful interplay with notes of cocoa and vanilla. Nuances of violets and a subtle minerality round off the bouquet. Suckling comments on the bouquet of the Alión 2020: "Ripe, dark plums and black cherries with violets, stone, coffee and graphite. Also fine notes of balsamic fruit and cocoa powder."On the palate, this outstanding creation from Vega Sicilia is dry and at the same time intensely fruity, with masterfully integrated, dense tannins. Suckling finds these idiosyncratic words: "Full-bodied and juicy with an iron fist of tannins, yet so velvety and polished. Very long, concentrated finish that shows a lot of finesse and layers." Aromas of dates, wild berries and honey complete the taste experience, which lingers for an impressively long time.The impenetrable purple-red wine comes from vines that are almost 40 years old. The Spanish red wine was matured in barriques for around 15 months. Bodegas y Viñedos Alión itself recommends enjoying the Tempranillo at a drinking temperature of 18 degrees. It is a fantastic accompaniment to high-quality beef or lamb. Also ideal with game dishes. Bottled in May 2022, the Alión 2020 has a cellaring potential of up to 20 years.

Aalto PS

How do you make an excellent wine even better? For Mariano García Fernández, the founder of the Bodega Aalto estate, this can be achieved only by selecting the best grapes. The selection of the grapes was carried out parcel by parcel. This explains the wine’s ‘PS’ designation, which stands for ‘parcel’ and ‘selection’. Only the grapes from the best parcels with the oldest vines are selected to produce the Aalto PS. The grapes for this pure varietal Tempranillo come partly from vines that are more than 60 years old. The vines grow on soils with lime and slate subsoils, giving the wine a lovely mineral freshness. The wine is aged in steel tanks before it matures for 21 months in new French barriques. Subsequently, the wine is aged for another 6 months in used casks. The Aalto PS is a dark, dense purple in colour. Its bouquet is characterised by strong notes of wood and flavours of plums and black cherries. On the palate, the wine is extremely complex, concentrated and powerful. The body continues unabated in a never-ending finish. Although the wine is already quite balanced, further ageing in the bottle will certainly enhance its quality. Serve the Aalto PS with lamb, game or tangy cheeses. This wine is a genuine delight! It is also available in a magnum bottle.

There are quite a few people who claim that Aalto wines represent the best of Spanish viticulture in the Ribera del Duero region. Every year, the Aalto wines are once again compared to those produced by the Vega Sicilia estate, and the Aalto wines often win by a nose. For more than 30 years, Mariano García Fernández, the founder of the Aalto winery, was responsible for the wines produced by the Vega Sicilia estate, of which he was the Technical Director. With his own Bodega Aalto, García Fernández wants to achieve the best result without losing respect for the grapes. In creating his wines, he strives for the maximum expression of the terroir, uniting structure and power with elegance and complexity. The Aalto was characterised by a warm winter’s end and an early spring with early flowering. Sufficient rain in summer and a dry autumn led to grapes of an optimal quality. The grapes come mainly from very old vines that are up to 80 years old.The pure varietal Tempranillo (in the Burgos and Valladolid region better known as Tinto Fino) is a cherry red in colour. The wine offers fine notes of spices on the nose, along with light flavours of well-integrated wood. On the palate, the Aalto is wonderfully fresh and dense. Notes of tobacco, coffee and subtle aromas of liquorice reveal the unique style so typical of this Aalto. Due to its soft and round character, the wine can already be enjoyed young. Owing to the soft, enclosing tannins and a good acidity, the Aalto will increase its complexity over the coming years. The ageing of the wine in half new and half used barrels ofAmerican and French oak ensures that it will store well in the bottle. Enjoy the Aalto with a lovely beef roast or simply on its own in front of the fireplace.

The Macán is a single-varietal Tempranillo from Rioja, and the current vintage is yet another exceptional red wine.The bouquet of this Spanish red wine is fascinatingly multifaceted. It combines notes of blackberries and plums with subtle hints of licorice, tobacco, coffee, chocolate, and cinnamon. Floral notes (violets) and wonderfully harmonious oak round out the bouquet. The U.S. wine critic writes: “A beautiful, complex nose with soft spices, cedar, fresh blackberries, red plums, truffles, and a hint of walnuts and mocha.”On the palate, this creation from Vega Sicilia and Baron de Rothschild is dry and powerful, with expansive tannins and impressive fruitiness. The Macán was aged for 16 months in oak, with 55 percent of the aging taking place in barrique barrels and the remainder in large casks. The grapes come from vines that are nearly four decades old. Enjoy this Tempranillo at a serving temperature of about 18 degrees.
