The Morgenster Estate Reserve is a Bordeaux blend at its best. Henry Kotze, cellar master at Morgenster, has proven that wines can be perfectly produced in this style in South Africa. With the expert guidance of Pierre Lurton from Chateau Cheval Blanc, only the best grapes were selected. The ruby-red wine is incredibly dense. Its intense bouquet offers wonderful aromas of plums, red and black berries, almonds, coffee and caramel, along with notes of cigar box, pencil and cassis. On the palate, the wine has an elegant mouthfeel, with fine, noticeable tannins. Initially, the Morgenster Estate Reserve presents an interaction of fruit and light sweetness. It is well-balanced due to a wonderful harmony between acidity and minerality. Sip by sip, the wine opens up further, fully revealing its great potential. It is a genuine delight that can already be enjoyed now but will further improve over the next two decades. We recommend decanting the wine two hours before drinking it.

Morgenster Estate Reserve is perfect to accompany various meals. This fantastic wine goes beautifully with structured and hearty dishes as well as meals offering rich and intense aromas.

In line with tradition, Morgenster also produces a second Bordeaux-style wine in South Africa. The Morgenster Lourens River Valley is a blend consisting of the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot grape varieties, produced with the advisory assistance of Pierre Lurton from Chateau Cheval Blanc in Bordeaux. The philosophy aims at creating an accessible wine that particularly reflects the fruit aromas so typical of the terroir, and simultaneously ensuring longevity. The wine is a bright, opaque ruby-red in the glass. On the nose, it offers lovely cherry aromas, complemented by notes of strawberry tarts and cassis. After the Morgenster Lourens River Valley has breathed for a while, it shows aromas of liquorice, vanilla and spices, accompanied by fruity nuances of plums, mulberries and raspberries. The wine is silky and smooth on the palate, offering a delicious fruity sweetness. The elegant tannins develop a lovely balance between ripe berry aromas and a great freshness. Henry Kotze, cellar master at Morgenster, speaks of a worthwhile wine that gains in complexity after it is decanted.The Morgenster Lourens River Valley goes beautifully with roast duck, poultry and ostrich. It is also a perfect accompaniment to risotto with wild mushrooms or roast lamb.

Wenn man einen der absoluten Spitzenweine aus Südafrika probieren möchte, kommt man am De Toren Fusion V nicht vorbei. Die V steht dabei für die 5 im Wein verwendeten Bordeaux Rebsorten. Die Qualität lässt sich mit den großen Weinen aus dem Bordeaux durchaus messen. Nach der Handlese und Selektion der Trauben schloss sich eine lange schonende Gärung an. Die Reifung fand über einen Zeitraum von 12 Monaten in zu 50% neuen und 50% Fässern zweiter Füllung statt. Dabei kamen Fässer von 225 Litern Größe zum Einsatz. (90% französische und 10% amerikanische) Im Glas ein klares Violett mit leichtem Funkeln. Die Nase ist geprägt von Blaubeere, Zeder, Schwarzkirsche, Bitterschokolade und einem Hauch Fennel. Am Gaumen offeriert der De Toren Fusion V eine seidige Fülle mit einem Hauch süßer Frucht. Das Gesamtpaket aus wohl integrierten Tanninen, lang anhaltender Tiefe, fester Struktur und Mineralität machen diesen Wein zu einem Spitzenprodukt.

Wenn man die Geschichte dahinter kennt, sehr gut können wir da nur sagen. Giulio Bertrand, geborener Italiener, kaufte 1992 das Weingut Morgenster. Nach erster Restaurierung stand er hinter dem alten Herrenhaus und sah auf einen Hügel. Der Hügel erinnerte ihn an seine Heimat und so er beschloss eine heimatliche Rebsorte dort anzubauen und das war eben die Traube Nebbiolo.Die Trauben des Nabucco Nebbiolo stammen aus einem einzigen 1,6 ha großen Weinberg. Dieser raffinierte, tief nuancierte Wein drückt bemerkenswerte Eleganz und große Kraft dieser berühmten norditalienischen Rebsorte aus. Dieser Wein hat eine helle Farbe und einen hohen Säuregehalt. Er ist vollmundig und passt hervorragend als Essensbegleiter. Seine erdige Struktur erinnert an einen Pinot Noir, allerdings mit mehr Geschmack und Kraft. Im Abgang wunderbar weich und stoffig. Ein südafrikanischer Nebbiolo also: der Morgenster Nabucco Nebbiolo. Da hilft nur probieren!
