Translated from the Dutch or Afrikaans "Vergelegen" means "secluded." In the wine world, however, the Vergelegen wine estate, located about 50 kilometers east of Cape Town, is far from being an unknown estate. Wines of the traditional winery are among the best in South Africa.
The Sauvignon Blanc Reserve, awarded by John Platter with 4.5 stars, has a pale color. On the nose notes of kiwi, green fig, passion fruit and guava. On the palate a refreshing crisp acidity, concentrated fruit and excellent balance - nestled in a pleasant mineral base note. A full-bodied wine with a lasting finish.
The vineyards of Vergelegen range in altitudes from 140 to more than 300 meters above sea level. The grapes for this 100 percent Sauvignon Blanc come from "Schaapenberg vineyard", one of the highest areas of the winery. The vines in this cooler location are harvested at least two weeks later than the other Sauvignon Blanc areas. The harvest is done by hand in the cool morning hours to preserve the flavors.
The Vergelegen Wine Estate has more than 300 years of history. In recent years, the picturesque vineyard is also a popular venue for international celebrities from politics, culture and sports.
