Paserene Marathon

The Paserene Marathon is a wine with character that rightly bears its name: This expressive cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot comes from the renowned boutique winery Paserene, which is known in South Africa for its terroir-driven, precisely vinified wines with a clear signature. The Marathon combines persistence, intensity and elegance - a powerful red wine that contains the best of the Tulbagh region.

The grapes come from low-yielding vines that thrive on weathered slate soil in Tulbagh - an area characterized by hot days and cool nights. In addition, lots from Elgin, the coolest wine region in South Africa, and from Franschhoek are vinified, giving the wine aromatic complexity and fresh structure. Fermentation and ageing are carried out with a particular focus on balance and finesse: The Marathon is fermented in small, upright French oak barrels. To avoid over-extraction, the so-called "punch-down" is carried out by hand. Half of the maturation in oak barrels takes place naturally in order to preserve the origin and pure character of the grape varieties. Before release, the wine rests in the bottle for at least six months, which gives it additional harmony and depth.

In the glass, the Marathon has a deep, black-violet hue - a visual harbinger of its concentration. Intense aromas of dark berries, cassis and blackcurrants unfold on the nose, accompanied by floral notes, black pepper and a fine spiciness. On the palate, it impresses with its powerful structure, silky tannins and wonderfully integrated wood spice. The dark fruit, underpinned by balsamic and earthy notes, continues into the long, mineral finish.

The Paserene Marathon is an excellent accompaniment to hearty dishes such as grilled lamb with rosemary, game birds or a ribeye steak cooked over an open fire. Matured cheeses such as old Gouda or herb sheep's cheese also harmonize perfectly with its depth. For a special moment of pleasure, a serving temperature of 16-18 °C is recommended.

With its long-lasting structure and perfect balance of fruit, tannin and terroir, Marathon is a red wine with great ageing potential - ideal for collectors, connoisseurs and anyone who appreciates wines with personality and expression. An authentic South African blend that can develop magnificently over decades.

Paserene Union
The Paserene Union is a pure Syrah from the South African region of Tulbagh, which is one of the country's most impressive red wines with its intense structure, deep aromas and remarkable elegance. This wine comes from low-yielding vines that thrive on decomposed slate soils. The combination of dry soil, hot days and cool nights produces exceptionally concentrated fruit and gives the Syrah its powerful, complex personality. The grapes are carefully harvested by hand and fermented in open concrete tanks for around four weeks. This traditional method allows a gentle extraction of color and aroma and expresses the full depth of the terroir. The wine then matures for sixteen months in used French oak barrels, giving the fruit enough space to fully develop. A further year of bottle ageing before release ensures perfect integration of the aromas. The wine is bottled unfiltered to preserve its authentic structure and natural strength. In the glass, Paserene Union has an almost inky black hue. The bouquet is intense and multi-faceted, characterized by ripe dark fruits such as blueberries and mulberries, accompanied by smoky and earthy notes reminiscent of charcoal, bacon and a hint of tar. Subtle hints of cedar wood, tobacco and fine spices testify to the subtle influence of wood. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and powerful, with dense, fine-meshed tannins and a wonderfully balanced acidity. The concentrated fruit is complemented by a striking mineral component that provides additional depth and warmth. The long, multi-layered finish makes it clear that this Syrah has enormous ageing potential. In culinary terms, Paserene Union harmonizes particularly well with strong meat dishes such as grilled lamb, braised beef or game with a spicy herb crust. Matured hard cheeses also form a successful contrast to the dark fruit and structure of the wine. For an exceptional finish, this Syrah can even be paired with a dark chocolate tart, which elegantly picks up on its fine roasted aromas and velvety texture. Ideally, serve the wine at 16 to 18°C to allow its aromas to develop optimally. The Paserene Union is a Syrah with great ambition, reflecting the essence of the South African terroir in its most powerful form. An expressive, yet finely balanced wine that will delight in the here and now as well as develop its full potential over decades.

Spier Frans K. Smit Red
Every vintage of Spier Frans K. Smit Red is a work of art. The vines for the blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot all come from the western and north-western slopes of the Helderberg in Stellenbosch. Decomposed granite soils there store water well, which leads to slow maturation and increased mineral complexity. The area also benefits from the cooling effect of the nearby Atlantic Ocean. The winegrowers invest a great deal of time and care in each individual vine. After harvesting by hand and carefully packing the grapes into small 10 kg crates, they are hand-picked, crushed and pumped into a mixture of 500 l barrels and small steel tanks, where the juice remains on the lees for 3 - 6 weeks. The wine is then transferred to small French oak barrels for a maturation period of around 24 months.Winemaker Frans K Smit, after whom the wine is named, selects the best blends from the barrels, which then continue to mature in the barrel for a further 6-8 months. Each barrel of the limited, internationally sought-after red wine is personally made by him.The Spier flagship impresses in the glass with its deep and vibrant ruby red color. On the nose, there are notes of cigar box, berries, cherries and nuances of mint. The Cabernet Franc brings subtle richness, sweet fruit and creaminess to the palate, while the Petit Verdot brings balance and structure. The red wine is complex and dense in structure, with a silky, medium palate and a soft, long finish. The tannins are firm and assertive on the one hand, but also round, soft and elegant. The balance and refined elegance of this blend harmonize well with meat dishes such as rib-eye steaks, roast beef and smoky grilled steaks.
