The Fairview Eenzaamheid Shiraz comes from a vineyard in Paarl planted in 1996 with the two Shiraz clones SH1 and SH21 on Richter 99 rootstock. The deep, weathered slate soils of the Swartland provide excellent water retention and allow the non-irrigated vines to ripen evenly even during the hot, dry summers.
The hand-harvested grapes were brought to the cellar in small crates at 24° Balling, destemmed, and carefully sorted by hand. Fermentation then took place in open French oak barrels, accompanied by pigeage and pumping over. After pressing the skins, 25% of the wine underwent malolactic fermentation in new French barriques; the remaining wine aged in second- and third-use barrels. In total, barrel aging lasted 20 months before the final barrel selection was made and the wine was bottled after light filtration.
On the nose, the Shiraz is dense and complex, with spicy notes of cardamom and black pepper, as well as red plum and wild berries. On the palate, juicy red berry fruit takes center stage at first, accompanied by hints of fynbos. The fresh acidity and firm tannins give the wine structure and lend it a youthful finish.
The Fairview Eenzaamheid Shiraz pairs excellently with grilled beef and lamb chops with fennel relish. It is also a suitable choice with a leg of lamb roasted with bell peppers and Mediterranean side dishes.
