The historic Boschendal Winery is one of South Africa’s oldest wineries and was founded as early as 1685 in the picturesque Franschhoek Valley. Today, Boschendal stands for a successful blend of historic winemaking tradition, modern cellar technology, and sustainable viticulture. With a clear focus on origin and quality, the estate produces wines full of character that impressively reflect the region’s terroir. The Boschendal 1685 Shiraz embodies this very philosophy, blending grapes from premier vineyards around Stellenbosch, Elgin, and the Swartland.

In the glass, the Boschendal 1685 Shiraz displays a deep, dark ruby red color. The bouquet is characterized by intense aromas of ripe dark fruits such as plums, black cherries, and blackberries, accompanied by a subtle peppery spice and delicate hints of spices. On the palate, the wine is powerful, juicy, and harmoniously balanced. A round fruit core, elegant spice, and silky, ripe tannins ensure a smooth mouthfeel and a long, fruit-forward finish.

The wine is crafted from carefully selected Shiraz grapes grown in premium vineyards. After harvest, the grapes are gently processed and fermented under temperature control to best preserve the variety’s characteristic fruit and spice. The wine is then aged in oak barrels, which imparts additional depth, structure, and harmonious tannin integration.

The Boschendal 1685 Shiraz is a versatile food pairing and goes exceptionally well with grilled or braised beef, lamb dishes, game, or spicy marinated grilled dishes. It also pairs beautifully with Mediterranean oven-baked dishes and aged hard cheeses. The ideal serving temperature is 16–18 °C.

Das Weingut Boschendal ist eine der ältesten Weinfarmen der Neuen Welt und liegt mit seinen 3500 ha am Eingang zum Franchhoek-Tal zwischen Simonsberg und den Groot Drakenstein Bergen.

1685 wurde es dem Hugenotten Jeyn Lo Log gegründet. 1715 ging es in den Besitz der ebenfalls hugenottischen Brüder Pierre, Abrahm und Jaques de Villier über, die Boschendal zu Größe und Respekt verhalfen. Aus dieser Zeit stammt auch der Weinkeller von Boschendal, der heute aber natürlich mit modernster Technik ausgestattet ist.
