“Old-vine magic”-  The American wine critic James Suckling waxes lyrical when he writes about the 2019 Bibi Graetz Colore. And Suckling, who awards 99 points (!) for this single-varietal Sangiovese from Tuscany, is not alone in his rhapsodizing. Ninety-six points in Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, 98 points in Falstaff: Italian winemaking has indisputably reached a pinnacle with the Bibi Graetz Colore 2019.
 
The red wine's bouquet seduces you with its fascinating complexity and intensity: notes of blackberries, raspberries, cherries, cassis, and dried rose petals, complemented by nuances of coriander and balsamic herbs. On the palate, the ruby Sangiovese is full-bodied and compact, with silky-soft tannins that could not be more harmoniously integrated. It has an impressive structure and length. Suckling writes, “So fine, yet so powerful. This is an incredible combination of fruit and structure. Old-vine magic. Old-vine magic.”

Bibi Graetz himself writes, “Monumental, there is no better word to describe this vintage. Roundness in every single aspect of the wine: elegance, freshness and great acidity that gives very fine layers surprisingly detectable on the nose and at the first sip.”

The effort behind this creation was extraordinary: the grapes came from three sites in Tuscany (Lamole, Vincigliata and Siena) with vines from the 1970s, ‘80s and ‘90s. The individual sites were harvested up to eight times in order to harvest grapes with the perfect degree of ripeness. This was followed by a further sorting of the grapes in the winery.
 
The wines of the individual growing areas were vinified separately. The precise composition of the blend was decided only after the Sangiovese creations from the individual sites had matured in barriques for 20 months. Only the best barrels of the entire production were included in the Colore.

Bibi Graetz is celebrating his 20th anniversary as a winemaker with the Colore 2019, and the design of the bottle is accordingly distinctive. This Sangiovese is one of the outstanding highlights bearing witness to the creative power of Bibi Gräetz. Happy are those who can call a bottle their own. Suckling’s recommendation: “Drink after 2026.”

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate awards 94 points and high praise to the Bibi Graetz Testamatta Rosso Toscana 2019 as “a pure expression of Sangiovese” in its accolade to this fantastic Tuscan red wine, which is also celebrated by other wine critics around the globe. James Suckling awards it 97 points, followed by Falstaff with 95. Connoisseurs can look forward to a fascinatingly complex and intense bouquet. Suckling writes of a “very attractive combination of dried fruit and spices with black cherries and plums. Aromas of flowers and sandalwood, too.”  The Wine Advocate detects “perfumed blue flower, candied orange peel, wet earth and plummy black fruit.” On the palate, the Bibi Graetz Testamatta Rosso Toscana 2019 is full-bodied, simultaneously powerful and elegant. The velvety tannins are wonderfully integrated and intertwined with the intense fruit, resulting in an exceptional taste experience. Moreover, according to the Wine Advocate, “a strong chalky mineral signature” characterises the looong finish. Bibi Graetz himself wrote, “Elegance, that is the word that describes Testamatta 2019,” adding that “Testamatta 2019 is perfectly balanced with deep layers that show incredible complexity."The grapes for the single-varietal Sangiovese come from the five best vineyards of the Testamatta estate in Tuscany: Vincigliata, Londa, Lamole, Montefili and Siena. The vines are up to 80 years old. The staff involved in producing the Bibi Graetz Testamatta undertake up to eight (!) harvesting phases. Only grapes of optimal ripeness are used in this shimmering, deep ruby red wine. The wines from the individual vineyards were aged in oak casks for 20 months. Graetz wrote, “The 20th anniversary of Testamatta is a real milestone, the pinnacle of quality that I have been looking for in my Sangiovese since the first vintage in 2000.” Those who open a bottle of the Testamatta 2019 are fortunate to be able to share in it.

Bei kontrollierter Temperatur von 28/30° fand die Fermentation in 70 hl Holzfässern statt. Während der 20-25 Tage andauernden Gärung wurde die Maische täglich umgepumpt. Danach erfolgte eine 4 jährige Reifung in 18 und 25 Litern slowenischen Eichenfässern. Nachdem der Casisano Colombaiolo Brunello Di Montalcino Riserva DOCG in Flaschen abgefüllt wurde, reifte dieser weitere 6 Monate.Im Glas zeigt sich der Rotwein in einem intensiven rubinrot. Seine Geruchsnoten sind komplex und fein. Aufgrund der langen Reifung verbinden sich süße Gewürze und Noten von Frucht. Am Gaumen ist der Casisano Colombaiolo Brunello Di Montalcino Riserva DOCG streng mit reifen und samtigen Tanninen. Struktur und Eleganz sind im Gleichgewicht, der Abgang ist frisch und harmonisch.Ein besonderer Genuss ist dieser Rotwein bei einer Trinktemperatur von 18°C und ein wunderbarer Begleiter zu roten Fleischsorten, Schmorgerichten, Wildgeflügel, Pilzen oder Trüffeln.

Suckling erkennt im Bouquet Noten von Veilchen und Heidelbeeren mit Nelken und Tannenzapfen, Galloni schreibt von dunklen Früchten, Kies, Gewürzen, Lakritz und Leder.Am Gaumen ist der tief granat-lila farbene Wein trocken, mit mittlerem bis vollem Körper. Er „zeigt feste, exquisit feinkörnige Tannine und eine nahtlose Frische, die die intensiven, knackigen schwarzen Früchte wunderbar umrahmen und klingt lang und mineralisch aus“ (Perroti-Brown). Suckling schreibt von „straffen, nahtlosen Tanninen, wie fein geschliffene Diamanten. Er ist am Ende sehr geschlossen und zurückhaltend. Schwerelos. Braucht viel Zeit zum Öffnen. Ein einzigartiger Wein“. Galloni: „Ein Wein von Größe und Opulenz, der im Jahrgang 2018 jeden Winkel des Gaumens erreicht. Betörende Aromatik und präzise, geschliffene Tannine – so schwer zu erreichen in einem Wein aus Höhenlagen – runden das Ganze stilvoll ab.“Bill Harlan entdeckte die herausragende Lage, auf der die Trauben für den Promontory reifen, in den frühen 1980er-Jahren. Im Seitental des Napa Valley, geprägt von Hunderten Hektar Wald, baut Harlan auf 30 Hektar vor allen Dingen Cabernet Sauvignon an, dazu etwas Cabernet Franc, Malbec und Petit Verdot. Die Höhenlage und vor allen Dingen die außergewöhnliche Komplexität der Böden (wozu auch Schiefer-Gestein gehört) machen den Promontory zu einem einzigartigen Wein.Dass die Macherinnen und Macher des Promontory beim Ausbau dieses „Bordeaux-Blend“ aus den USA wesentlich auf Großholz von Stockinger aus Österreich setzen, macht das Ganze endgültig zu einer Ausnahme-Kreation. Seit 2009, dem ersten auf den Markt gebrachten Jahrgang, gab es in Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate für den Promontory im Grunde immer Bewertungen von 97 oder mehr Punkten (einzige Ausnahme: 2011 mit 94+). Der Promontory 2016 erhielt die magischen 100 Punkte.
