Raka Barrel Select Merlot 2021

The Raka Barrel Select Merlot is a characterful, single-varietal red wine from the Western Cape in South Africa that exploits the full potential of this grape variety. With hand-picked grapes, traditional vinification and careful ageing in French barriques (25% new), this wine combines fruit, spice and structure in an elegant, accessible style - ideal for connoisseurs and Merlot lovers.On the nose, the Raka Barrel Select Merlot reveals intense aromas of ripe black fruit, accompanied by fresh mint and eucalyptus. On the palate, a harmonious interplay of spicy oak, juicy plums and supple tannins unfolds. The structure is clear and well-defined, the finish is long and balanced.After careful manual harvesting and a double selection of the grapes, fermentation took place with pure yeasts with daily flooding and manual punchdowns. The wine then underwent malolactic fermentation and was matured in 225-liter French oak barrels, 25% of which were new. This careful ageing gives it additional complexity without masking the fruit.This red wine is an excellent accompaniment to braised veal, pasta with mushroom cream sauce, lamb chops or mature soft cheese. It also impresses on its own with its balanced structure and fine spiciness. It is best served at a drinking temperature of 16-18°C to allow its aromatic diversity to unfold optimally.

Dieser Pinot Noir aus dem Elgin Valley in Südafrika lässt keine Genusswünsche offen: Animierende Noten von Himbeere, Erdbeere, Johannisbeere und Kirsche vereinen sich zu einem faszinierenden Bukett. Dazu kommen, so formuliert es Tim James in John Platter’s Wine Guide, herzhafte Noten von Waldboden.Der reinsortige Pinot Noir aus Südafrika reifte für etwa ein Jahr im französischen Barrique aus Burgund heran. Zum Einsatz kamen dabei Fässer von drei verschiedenen Küfern und 20 Prozent neue Eiche sowie Fässer zweiter (40%) und dritter (20%) Füllung.Das Elgin Valley galt lange als das Zentrum des Anbaus von Äpfeln und Birnen in Südafrika. Mittlerweile haben einige Weingüter bewiesen, wie ideal das Terroir auch für den Anbau hochwertiger Weine ist. Das Weingut Shannon zählt dazu.

Die „Good Natured Organic“-Serie des renommierten südafrikanischen Weingutes, dessen Geschichte bis 1692 zurückreicht, kommt vollständig ohne künstliche Pestizide, Fungizide und Düngemittel aus. Je weniger man sich in die Natur einmische, desto besser sind die Ergebnisse, ist Tania Kleintjes, Organic Winemaker bei Spier, überzeugt. Dieser Shiraz aus Südafrika bestätigt das eindrucksvoll.Am Gaumen ist der Rotwein vom Kap trocken und warm, mit einer außergewöhnlichen Tiefe. Fruchtbetonte Aromen, vor allem von Brombeeren, prägen das Geschmackserlebnis. Das Finish ist angenehm weich und geschmeidig. Der rubinrote Spier Good Natured Organic Shiraz wurde größtenteils im Edelstahltank ausgebaut. Dazu kam ein kleiner Anteil an französischem Eichenholz zum Einsatz.
