Château Mauvesin Barton

The 2022 Château Mauvesin Barton Moulis comes from the renowned Moulis-en-Médoc appellation in the Médoc region north of Bordeaux. The estate has been owned by the Barton family since 2011; the family also owns the famous Château Léoville Barton and Château Langoa Barton. The 2022 vintage was crafted from 55% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 9% Cabernet Franc and benefited from the estate’s clay- and limestone-rich soils, which retained remarkable freshness despite the hot and dry growing season.In the glass, the wine displays a deep ruby red color with violet highlights. The bouquet reveals intense aromas of black currants, blackberries, and dark cherries, complemented by floral notes, spices, cedar, and subtle hints of vanilla and toast from the barrique aging, one-third of which took place in new barrels. On the palate, the Mauvesin Barton 2022 is full-bodied and juicy, with ripe fruit, precise acidity, and fine-grained tannins. Notes of cassis, plums, black pepper, and subtle toasted aromas lead into a long, elegant finish.In terms of quality, the 2022 vintage ranks among the best wines produced to date at Château Mauvesin Barton. James Suckling awarded it 92–93 points, Jane Anson gave it 92 points, and Decanter rated it 92 points. This wine’s aging potential extends until around 2035.As a food pairing—assuming you don’t wish to enjoy the wine on its own—this classic Bordeaux harmonizes superbly with braised beef, rack of lamb, game dishes such as venison or roe deer, and hearty stews. It also pairs excellently with duck breast, aged hard cheeses, and mushroom dishes. Its combination of dark fruit, spice, and structured tannins makes it a versatile pairing for fine dining.
