Spier Frans K. Smit Red

Every vintage of Spier Frans K. Smit Red is a work of art. The vines for the blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot all come from the western and north-western slopes of the Helderberg in Stellenbosch. Decomposed granite soils there store water well, which leads to slow maturation and increased mineral complexity. The area also benefits from the cooling effect of the nearby Atlantic Ocean.

The winegrowers invest a great deal of time and care in each individual vine. After harvesting by hand and carefully packing the grapes into small 10 kg crates, they are hand-picked, crushed and pumped into a mixture of 500 l barrels and small steel tanks, where the juice remains on the lees for 3 - 6 weeks. The wine is then transferred to small French oak barrels for a maturation period of around 24 months.

Winemaker Frans K Smit, after whom the wine is named, selects the best blends from the barrels, which then continue to mature in the barrel for a further 6-8 months. Each barrel of the limited, internationally sought-after red wine is personally made by him.

The Spier flagship impresses in the glass with its deep and vibrant ruby red color. On the nose, there are notes of cigar box, berries, cherries and nuances of mint. The Cabernet Franc brings subtle richness, sweet fruit and creaminess to the palate, while the Petit Verdot brings balance and structure. The red wine is complex and dense in structure, with a silky, medium palate and a soft, long finish. The tannins are firm and assertive on the one hand, but also round, soft and elegant.

The balance and refined elegance of this blend harmonize well with meat dishes such as rib-eye steaks, roast beef and smoky grilled steaks.

Spier Wines

Niel Joubert kaufte Spier 1965.

The freshness and aromatic depth is long-lasting.Enjoy this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), Petit Verdot (14%), Merlot (10%), Cabernet Franc (4%) and Malbec (2%) with veal or other meat dishes. The Tokara wine estate has three growing regions of its own: The heart of Tokara beats in Stellenbosch. This is where the wine estate's success story began on the southern slopes of the Simonsberg hill. The "Highlands" growing region is located in the Elgin district. On the "Kogelberg Mountain", more than 400 meters above sea level, mainly Sauvignon Blanc ripens. Finally, in the Hemel-en-Arde Valley near the picturesque coastal town of Hermanus, Tokara's Siberia growing region is located on the cool southern slopes of Babylonstoren Mountain, almost 300 meters above sea level.Three outstanding growing areas, characterized by a cool climate as well as sandy loam soils and deep red, fertile Tukulu soils, give Tokara the opportunity to create distinctive wines full of character.

Beyerskloof Diesel Pinotage
Diesel Pinotage is certainly an unusual name for a wine. However, it quickly becomes clear when you know the story behind it. Diesel was the name of Beyers Truters, owner of Beyerskloof, dog and a beloved and loyal, constant companion of his master. The dog was not only to be found in the vineyard, but also in the cellar or next to the desk. So it was clear for Beyers Truter to name his best wine after his "best" friend. The grapes for the Beyerskloof Diesel Pinotage come from bushvine vines. This type of cultivation is frequently used in South Africa, especially for Pinotage. The fermentation process took place over 5 days in open barrels at an average temperature of 26 degrees Celsius. The mash was pressed down every 2 hours. Malolactic fermentation then took place in stainless steel tanks. New French oak barrels were used for the 21-month maturation. Of the 300 barrels filled, only 20 barrels were ultimately selected for the Diesel Pinotage. The color of the Beyerskloof Diesel Pinotage is deep purple. The bouquet is characterized by complex blackberry aromas and dark fruits, surrounded by an elegant cedar wood note. The palate reveals a fine but complex structure of black and red fruits. A truly great red wine that impresses with an excellent balance of fruit and wood. A wine with outstanding potential that will continue to give pleasure in 10 years or more. The ideal accompaniment to spicy Indian dishes or a well-matured rump steak. Beyerskloof Diesel is probably one of the best Pinotage from the Cape.
