Zwei renommierte Weingüter in Familienbesitz, eines aus Stellenbosch in Südafrika und das andere aus der Pfalz in Deutschland, haben sich zu einer einzigartigen Zusammenarbeit zusammengeschlossen, um einen Rieslingwein zu erzeugen, der das Engagement beider Familien für die Rebsorte Riesling und die Bedeutung von Weingütern in Familienbesitz unterstreicht.

Der Staying Alive Riesling ist eine Zusammenarbeit zwischen dem Pionierweingut Stellenbosch in Delheim und dem Weingut Hammel in Kirchbaum. Damit wird die Beziehung zwischen der Familie Sperling aus Delheim und den Hammels, die seit 1723 in Kirchbaum Wein herstellen, gefestigt.

Der Wein ist das Ergebnis einer vier Jahrzehnte währenden Freundschaft zwischen Christoph Hammel, dem Winzer der neunten Generation im Weingut Hammel, und den Sperlings aus Delheim, wo Christoph in den 1980er Jahren unter dem Delheimer Patriarchen Spatz Sperling seine ersten Schritte als Winzer machte.

Nora Sperling Thiel, Miteigentümerin und Direktorin von Delheim, sagt, die Zusammenarbeit mit Christoph Hammel sei der Höhepunkt einer 40-jährigen Beziehung und Freundschaft zwischen zwei Familien, die tief in der Weinwelt Südafrikas und Deutschlands verwurzelt sind.

Eine einzigartige Zusammenarbeit erforderte eine einzigartige, eigenständige Marke, und so wurde der Wein Staying Alive genannt, mit einem farbenfrohen Retro-Etikett, als ein gemeinsames Produkt von Delheim und Hammel.

In contrast to the 2014 vintage, the Delheim Grand Reserve 2015 consists of significantly higher percentages of Merlot. The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, which are predominant in this wine, come from three different vineyards located in the Stellenbosch region. The Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes grow on vineyards located on the slopes of the Klapmutskop Mountains. The vines for this wonderful cuvée are at least 10 years old, and some of them are more than 20 years old, ensuring exceptional depth and structure of the wine. To ensure optimal pre-selection, all the grapes were picked by hand.During the fermentation, the grapes were stirred three times a day to achieve maximal aroma extraction from the grapes. The whole process was carried out at controlled temperatures. After the three grape varieties were aged for 16 months, the maturity of the Merlot was decisive for the blending and therefore for the mixture of the final wine. Finally, the Delheim Grand Reserve matured for another 4 months in used 300-litre oak casks.On the nose, the brilliant, dark ruby-red wine pampers your senses with aromas of mint, cassis and truffle, rounded off by fine nuances of red berries. On the palate, the wine shows wonderful fruity notes which are preserved despite the wine’s immense fullness and power. The Delheim Grand Reserve 2015 goes beautifully with any luxurious meal and is also an ideal accompaniment to tangy cheeses.
