Der Name Hartenberg kommt aus der afrikanischen Sprache (Afrikaans) und bedeutet „Herz des Berges“. Das Weingut liegt in der Region Stellenbosch, etwa 54 Kilometer östlich von Kapstadt. Hartenberg verfügt über 150 Hektar Land, von denen zwei Drittel mit Reben bepflanzt sind. Hier finden Sie neun verschiedene Bodenarten und ganz unterschiedliche mikroklimatische Bedingungen, die die Weine so besonders machen. Seit 1993 stellt Winzer Carl Schultz im Familienbetrieb Hartenberg Spitzenweine her.

Die Geschichte von Hartenberg reicht noch weiter zurück: Den Weinbaubetrieb gibt es bereits seit 1692. Hartenberg ist bekannt für seine großartigen Rotweine, für die die kargen Sandböden rund um Stellenbosch wie geschaffen sind. Bereits 1692 erhielten Cunraad Boin und Christoffel Esterhuizzen die Erlaubnis, das Land zu bearbeiten. Sie erkannten bald das Potenzial des Terroirs und pflanzten 1704 die ersten 2.000 Reben. Im selben Jahr nannte Gouverneur Van der Stel (Stellenbosch ist tatsächlich nach ihm benannt) das Weingut „Hartenberg“.

Hartenberg besitzt den größten unterirdischen Weinkeller Südafrikas. Hier werden alle Weine aufbewahrt und erst dann auf den Markt gebracht, wenn der Winzer Carl Schultz sie für optimal trinkreif hält.
