Boschkloof Kottabos Chenin Blanc Skin Contact

The Kottabos Chenin Blanc Skin Contact from Boschkloof is a Chenin Blanc from Stellenbosch in which skin contact is deliberately used during aging to enhance color, texture, and aromatic intensity. Boschkloof describes the wine as its own example of this style.

In skin contact winemaking, the must remains in contact with the grape skins before pressing. This gives the wine a deeper golden color, more structure, and a slightly grippy character. The method particularly enhances the fruit and spice notes and lends the Chenin Blanc additional depth.

On the nose, the wine is intense, with aromas of apple, quince, and dried apricot, complemented by notes of orange marmalade, orange zest, and dried herbs. On the palate, it combines juicy fruit with a fine, slightly grippy texture and pronounced aromatic depth. This dry wine has a longer, spicier, and increasingly hearty finish.

Thanks to its structure and aromatic intensity, the Kottabos Chenin Blanc Skin Contact is particularly well-suited to dishes with bold flavors and distinct textures. It pairs well, for example, with spicy lamb, tagines, charcuterie, or aged Cheddar.

Boschkloof Kottabos Grenache Syrah
The Kottabos Grenache/Syrah from Boschkloof comes from the Polkadraai Hills near Stellenbosch. The vines grow on weathered granite soils; the wine, produced by Reenen Borman, is crafted as a Rhône-inspired cuvée, with Grenache making up the larger portion. The winemaking process deliberately involves as little intervention as possible. The Grenache is fermented 100% as whole clusters in open fermentation tanks to preserve freshness and spice, while the Syrah is fermented after being fully destemmed, providing additional structure. The Grenache is then aged in concrete, and the Syrah in used French oak barrels. The two components are blended only later and bottled with minimal filtration. On the nose, the Kottabos Grenache/Syrah is distinctly fragrant and inviting, with red berries, crushed cherries, and floral notes of violets and lavender. On the palate, juicy aromas of raspberry and red plum meet white pepper and the spicy, earthy notes of fynbos. This rather light-footed, finely structured wine possesses fresh, focused acidity and fine-grained tannins that give way to an elegant and pleasantly drinkable finish. Thanks to its lively acidity and spicy character, the Kottabos pairs excellently with charcuterie, wood-fired pizza, and burgers. It also pairs well with roasted pork or poultry, mildly spiced dishes such as Thai curries, and hearty vegetarian cuisine. It can be served slightly chilled.

Roodekrantz 1983 Old Bush Vine Chenin Blanc
The Roodekrantz 1983 Old Bush Vine Chenin Blanc comes from the Swartland and is made from 41-year-old, dry-farmed bush vines grown on weathered granite soils with organic material. The wine pays tribute to its origins and the age of the vines with a clear, precise style that focuses on fruit, freshness and finesse. The grapes are harvested by hand in the early hours of the morning at optimum ripeness. After destemming, gentle crushing and pressing, the must is clarified overnight. 90% of the wine ferments in stainless steel tanks, while 10% is fermented in two 500-liter French oak barrels. After alcoholic fermentation, the wine is aged for three months on the fine lees to promote depth and character. A small portion matured in wood is then blended with the wine aged in stainless steel, which adds complexity and richness. On the nose, the wine displays aromatic notes of tropical and stone fruits such as white peach, pineapple, citrus zest and yellow apple, complemented by a subtle hint of corn kernel that adds depth. On the palate, it is clear and precise with soft, well-integrated acidity. A discreet wood influence adds dimension without overpowering the purity of the wine. The style is straightforward and focused rather than opulent, carried by clean tropical fruit and a fresh citrus accent on the finish. Composed, refreshing and true to the old vines, this Chenin Blanc stands for finesse, focus and pure fruit. An excellent accompaniment to grilled sea bream or king prawns with lemon and herbs, fresh salads with fennel and goat's cheese, light chicken dishes, sushi or sashimi as well as mild soft cheeses.

Delheim Chenin Blanc Wild Ferment
The grapes for the Delheim Chenin Blanc Wild Ferment come from two different blocks or vineyards on the Delheim estate in South Africa. The grapes were harvested at different times. The grapes harvested around 14 days earlier were destemmed and pressed directly. The longer-ripened grapes were pressed with stems, which gives the juice a stronger character. After the juice was separated from the rest of the grapes, it was placed in 500 liter barrels for natural fermentation. This fermentation on the fine lees lasted around 3 months, after which the fermentation was stopped by clarification. No filtering took place in order to preserve the aromatic compounds in the wine. The Delheim Chenin Blanc Wild Ferment has a straw-yellow color with greenish reflections. The nose reveals aromas of peach, apricot and other tropical fruits. A subtle hint of caramel can also be detected. The beautifully balanced acidity and light barrel aromas underpin these impressions on the palate. A citrus note underlines the balance between fruit and acidity. In combination with goat's cheese, smoked salmon or Asian cuisine, this white wine is a real treat. This wine is vegan.
