Seit mehr als 160 Jahren wird auf dem Weingut Donnafugata auf Sizilien Wein hergestellt. Die 1851 errichteten Kellereien bestechen heute mit modernster Technologie. 1983 übernahmen Giacomo Rallo und seine Frau Gabriella das Weingut, das in den historischen Familienkellereien in Marsala und in den Weinbergen von Contessa Entellina, im Herzen des westlichen Siziliens, beheimatet ist. Einige Jahre später begann Giacomo Rallo auch auf der Insel Pantelleria Wein anzubauen. Heute unterstützen die Söhne José und Antonio Rallo ihre Eltern im Familienbetrieb. Auf ungefähr 330 Hektar produziert Donnafugata jährlich 2.500.000 Flaschen Wein.

Der Name Donnafugata hat einen geschichtlichen Hintergrund. Wörtlich übersetzt heißt es 'Frau auf der Flucht' und die Geschichte führt in die Anfänge des 19. Jahrhunderts, als Königin Maria Karolina, Gemahlin von Ferdinand IV. von Bourbon, beim Einmarsch der napoleonischen Truppen vom Hof in Neapel nach Sizilien in den Palast von Santa Margherita Belice flüchtete. Der Schriftsteller Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa griff in seinem Roman 'Der Leopard' die Bezeichnung Donnafugata auf und gab dem Palast und den Ländereien des Fürsten von Salina, wo sich heute die firmeneigenen Weinberge befinden, diesen Namen. Diese Episode ist der Grund, warum das Bildnis des Frauenkopfs mit windverwehten Haaren alle Flaschen von Donnafugata ziert.

Above-average temperatures in July favored the ripening process of the grapes. The large temperature differences between day and night have produced an extraordinary intensity of aroma in the grapes.This white wine from the typical Sicilian Grillo grape variety has notes of fruit with light flesh, especially peach. The bouquet is complemented by wonderfully animating notes of fresh field flowers and freshly cut grass. Wonderfully soft and pleasantly balanced on the palate.Grillo is an indigenous grape of Sicily, but "Grillo" (the cricket) is also a small animal that brings good luck.
