This Primitivo del Salento smells of ripe plums, cherry jam and nuances of cocoa. Good texture on the palate, velvety and full, with noticeable but well-integrated tannins. Fine nuances of vanilla are added in the finish.

This semi-dry red wine from vineyards on the Gulf of Taranto comes from the traditional and literally award-winning Varvaglione Vigne & Vini winery. The Italian wine matures for at least 12 months in American oak barrels.

The Primitivo goes well with hearty dishes such as braised meat, pizza, pasta and spicy cheese.

Die Familie Varvaglione arbeitet seit 1921 in der Weinbranche. Firmengründer war der Großvater des heutigen Inhabers, des Önologen Cosimo Varvaglione, der das Unternehmen zu internationalem Erfolg führte. Und auch die vierte Generation ist schon im Unternehmen tätig. Tradition, Erfahrung und modernste Kellertechnik, sowie die Liebe zum Wein bilden erklärtermaßen die Grundlage ihrer Weinherstellung. Das Unternehmen hat seinen Sitz in Leporano im Salento, der Halbinsel im Süden Apuliens, dem „Stiefelabsatz“ Italiens.

Cosimo Varvaglione legt den Schwerpunkt auf die traditionellen, apulischen Rebsorten Primitivo und Negroamaro, Malvasia, Aglianico und Verdeca, sowie Chardonnay als internationale Sorte. Varvaglione kultiviert diese Rebsorten auf 135 ha Rebfläche und arbeitet zusätzlich mit zahlreichen Winzern der Region zusammen. Der Önologe glaubt, dass die beiden wichtigsten Rebsorten Apuliens, Primitivo und Negroamaro, das Zeug zur internationalen Spitzenklasse haben. Die Auszeichnung mit drei Gläsern des Gambero Rosso bestätigte seine Einschätzung.

Bekannt wurden die Weine der Familie Varvaglione durch den Primitivo 12 e Mezzo Der Name bezieht sich übrigens auf den Alkoholgehalt von nur 12,5 Vol.%. Mit dem renommierten Papale Wein feierte man im Jahr 2011 den 90. Geburtstag des Unternehmens. Der „päpstliche“ Wein wurde benannt nach dem Weinberg, aus dem die Trauben stammen. Dieser war früher im Besitz der Familie des Papstes Benedikt XIII.

The deep, dark red wine from Apulia has earned every single one with its intense elegance.The Zolla Primitivo di Manduria DOP was awarded the Mundus Vini gold medal twice in a row and was also named the best red wine in its category and awarded "Grand Gold" by Vinitaly.The semi-dry Primitivo from the grape of the same name shows typical spiciness and a multi-faceted character, which is determined by convincing tannins. The bouquet is assertive, intense and very fruity, with cherries and red berries dominating. On the palate, the velvety texture is initially impressive, which is aromatically translated by the tannins and the play of fruit. The result is a balanced and smooth wine that is crowned by chocolate nuances on the long finish.Beef, spicy dishes and other intense culinary delights are required to appreciate this Italian wine at the table. It needs to breathe for at least an hour and should be drunk at 18 degrees.
