The Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet from the historic Penfolds winery is a classic Australian blend that impressively reflects the house’s signature style. This blend of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon comes from selected vineyards in South Australia and combines powerful fruit, structure-giving elegance, and harmoniously integrated oak notes into an expressive red wine with an international profile.
In the glass, the Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet is full-bodied and complex, with intense aromas of dark fruit. The Shiraz component contributes juicy, ripe notes of cherry and berry fruit, as well as a smooth, almost opulent texture, while Cabernet Sauvignon lends the wine backbone, structure, and finely woven tannins. The result is a balanced, full-bodied red wine with a clean profile and remarkable depth.
The bouquet unfolds in a complex and inviting manner: ripe dark cherries, raspberry coulis, and spicy baked notes blend with subtle hints of bergamot, sandalwood, and exotic spices. On the palate, the Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet is powerful yet supple and well-balanced. Notes of hazelnut chocolate, savory bacon, toasted wood nuances, and a subtle salty spice add further complexity. The well-integrated acidity lends freshness, while the tannins are fine and velvety, giving the wine an elegant finish.
The wine is aged in a combination of French and American oak, which lends it additional depth and a spicy structure without overpowering the fruit. The result is a harmonious, approachable red wine with international appeal and the signature Penfolds style.
The Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet pairs excellently with hearty meat dishes such as roast beef, leg of lamb, or grilled entrecôte. It is also an ideal companion to spicy pasta dishes and aged hard cheeses. The recommended serving temperature is 16–18 °C, allowing its full aroma to unfold optimally.
