The Roodekrantz 1974 Old Bush Vine Chenin Blanc comes from Agter-Paarl and is produced from 50-year-old, dry-farmed bush vines growing on weathered Malmesbury slate with granite components and some "Koffieklip". The wine combines the concentration of old vines with precision, freshness and fine texture.
The grapes are carefully harvested by hand and brought in at optimum ripeness in two harvests: the first harvest serves to preserve natural acidity, the second provides additional texture and mouthfeel. After destemming, gentle crushing and pressing, the must is fermented in used oak barrels. This is followed by extended ageing on the fine lees with regular batonnage, which creates additional depth and creaminess. The total ageing time in the older wooden barrels is 11 months.
On the nose, the wine displays expressive aromas of ripe mango, yellow peach, papaya, melon and orange peel, accompanied by a fragrant note of white pear. On the palate, it opens with a gentle creaminess and attractive texture, giving it fine volume without appearing rich or opulent. A balanced acidity carries the generous fruit core and ensures freshness and clarity. The taste reflects the aromas of yellow and orange tropical fruit, which fade into a lingering, aromatic finish. A subtle hint of spice adds extra dimension. Harmonious, fruit-driven and superbly balanced, this Old-Vine Chenin Blanc displays purity, freshness and elegant texture.
Pairs beautifully with roast chicken with citrus and herb butter, mild Cape Malay seafood curry, pork belly with caramelized apple and pear or grilled prawns with garlic, lemon and chilli. Also a harmonious accompaniment to Brie, Camembert or young goat's cheese.
