Elim is not one of the best-known regions in South Africa, but this does not mean that first-class wines are not produced there. Trizanne Barnard has intensively sought out good vineyards and grapes precisely in this area. This may be due to her close connection with nature, and can wonderfully balance the strenuous work of making wines by surfing on the coast, which is directly on her doorstep here.
The temperatures in Elim are cooler than in most other regions in South Africa, and are responsible for the TSW Reserve Syrah’s marvellous elegance. The soils in the Elim region are characterised by slate and pebbles, giving the wine its outstanding minerality. The grapes for this wine were fermented in open casks with natural yeast. Subsequently, the TSW Reserve Syrah matured for 12 months in second-fill barriques.
The wine has a wonderful bouquet offering fragrances of wild strawberries, lingonberries, pomegranate and dried rose petals. On the palate, the red wine shows a medium body and a crisp acidity typical of a Shiraz like this. The taste is pleasantly salty and spicy. This perfectly sophisticated and beautifully balanced Shiraz shows a persistent power, leading to a precise and richly nuanced finish.
